Replacing Factory Remote Start with Aftermarket

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have an Avalanche LTZ with the factory remote start option. I am looking to replace this with an after market one, either Autostart or a Viper. Has anyone done this before? Any issues I or the installer is going to run into?

Thanks

You will not be replacing anything. The aftermarket one will work differently and will not override the factory one most likely.

Any particular reason why? Factory one controls the heated seats and mirrors/rear defrost when it's cold. I don't know if the aftermarket does...

Only downfall I've seen is it tends to only run 5/10 minutes.

hi guys,

yes you are correct. looking for more range and an actual acknowledgement of when the truck has fired up, time remaining and increased range. i have always used autostart two-way remotes. they work great. have them on my wife's tahoe and my previous f150. five or so years of use. i like that the factory remote operates the heated seats automatically but the range is poor, no way to know if the truck is running if you cant see it (i do not have line of sight 85% of the time) 10 minutes is to short on cold days, rannge is not enough for me.

that is why i am looking for an aftermarket unit. the original response was that it should not/may not be a problem. i am surprised it wouldnt confict to be honest since they are both inline of the ignition circuit. the bypass module might work around it but i want to be sure everything will remain reliable.

thanks

If your Avalanche is late model with ON Star active, you can download a free app...ON STAR REMOTE LINK, and you can start it from anywhere in the USA. How's that for distance? You do not need to change remotes or spend a penny! My wife uses it on her 2010 Escalade. I have it also on my phone, but my Silverado does not have remote start from the factory. I can purchase the necessary remotes and activate the remote start, but the ON Start link will only work if your vehicle had remote start from the factory. It's an On Star thing.

almost kind of makes me wish i kept on-star active. to be honest though, havent used it in any of my past vehicles, cts, tahoe or this avalanche.

No worries on installing an aftermarket system. I had it done on my last truck and I'll be doing it with my new truck since i do am not a fan of the factory set up. There are modules that will interact with your truck, disarm the factory alarm, remote start etc etc you will have zero issues as long as you have a good installer. My last several alarms were vipers but I'm thinking of trying compustar this time around. i really like their remote set up, options, and the keypad they offer.

I like my factory one alright but I also hate how it times out in 10 minutes, wish there was a way to make it run longer.

the run time doesn't bother me as much as i can't pull up to a gas station to run in and push the button so it stays running instead of shutting it off, and then remote starting it. the gas station by my house is too close for my truck to warm up all the way and i hate starting it and shutting it off like that.

As ten minutes approaches you can redo the command on your remote and it will go for ten more minutes. This can only be done once though per key cycle. Or just have kids, that's what my parents did. I used to think it was so cool to trudge out in the snow to start my parents cars, now I know better!

We had a Two-Way LCD Astrostart installed in our 2008 Suburban LTZ with no issues after three years of use. All functions of the factory remote work - heated seats - lift gate - extended range - no shutting off for quick errand.

Hi Guys,

I just realized I never came back to thank everyone for sharing their experience and providing additional information. You have all given me some valuable ideas and alternative options to investigate. So thank you.
