OGM-1 White/Static Noise Problem Solved

I decided to make a thread about a problem I had with my OGM-1 and the solution. I purchased this unit new from Walt in the beginning of the year. The headunit was working great from day 1. However, when I installed some amps in the truck about a month ago, that is when the static noise began. This high pitched whine could be heard at zero volume and would not change with engine RPM. The noise would also be heard with the engine off. Here is a list of audio equipment that I have installed:

 

Headunit: OGM-1

Speakers: Alpine type-R components (front) alpine type-r coaxial (rears)

Amps: JL Audio 600/4 HD and 750/1 HD

Sub: JL Stealth Box for crew cab pickup, 2 10inch w3 subs

 

Vehicle: 2012 GMC Sierra 2500, crew cab, diesel

 

Things attempted to fix the problem:

• Tried 3 different amps
  
• Ran 3 different sets of RCA cables (even ran a set directly to the amp over the seats)
  
• Installed ground loop isolators on the RCA cables
  
• Grounded all the equipment at the same location
  
• Ran different power wires to Amp
  
• Un -plugged the sub amp to see if that was causing interference
  

 

After many hours of trouble shooting and a call to Advent technical support, we found the solution.

I was informed, by the engineers at Advent, about GM vehicles and the excessive noise that comes through the power and ground wires going to the headunit. After installing the power line noise filter, the problem was solved. I hope this helps people who may be having the same issue.

Holy crap! I haven't seen this fix work since about 1982!!!

 

If we can verify it works for someone else, I'm more than happy to suggest it as the first line of defense for this problem.

Thats pretty interesting. Guess it depends on the type of interference you are having.

 

Where did you put it? What wires did you tie it into exactly?

The power line noise filter install is pretty straight forward. The filter is installed on the 12 volt constant wire going to the radio. Here is the procedure:

• Disconnect battery to prevent any shorts
  
• Cut the 12 volt constant wire going to the radio and as well as the ground wire
  
• The box has three wires; blue, red and black.
  
• The red will connect to the vehicle side 12V constant
  
• The blue connects to the radio side 12V constant
  
• Black will connect to the ground from the radio and this will then be connected to a metal surface near the radio
  

 

What you have then done is filter the 12 volt constant wire and relocated the ground. The install took about 10 mins. And now I can finally enjoy the music Just a quick reminder, this solved a static type noise heard at zero volume. This is not alternator whine, which changes pitch with RPM. That type of noise would require another type of fix.

I have this exact same problem except I do not have the OGM-1 (yet). Just have factory HU. I am running my Polk door speakers off an Alpine (KTP-445u) power pack (45 X 4). Static noise EXACTLY like you described. I may try this power line noise filter. Installer said it was normal and offered no solution like this or any at all.

 

Did you have any problem with your turn signal and chimes being too loud?

The OGM-1 corrects the loud signal and chimes. I do know they have a special harness for GM vehicles when installing an aftermarket radio to retain the signal/chimes and I believe it has a separate volume control. Maybe your installer can integrate the harness even though you are using the factory radio.
