A car audio adapter was sadly omitted from Apple’s new selection of video adapters for the iPhone 5, iPad mini and new iPad 4. Apple is providing adapters for cameras and TVs, but alas, not for car radios and monitors. But in January, we will see the first such adapter from an aftermarket company.

iSimple (Aamp of America) will display at the Consumer Electronics Show, an adapter that is able to extract video from the new Apple devices and send it to a car radio or screen, using the composite video format required by most car AV devices.

Scott Rothstein, Senior Product Manager was mum on the details but said the adapter will work with most car radios and car video monitors.

As CEoutlook readers know, with the iPhone 5 and newest iPads, Apple switched the video output to digital from analog, creating the need for special adapters to work with many existing products.

iSimple is the first company to claim it will offer a composite video solution for car audio equipment. We’ll have to wait until CES for more details.

Will this work with the OGM1 medialink?

No matter what it looks like, I would expect that we'll be able to adapt it to the Medialink with no issues...

Any idea if this item was ever made? I looked on their site and couldn't find anything for iPhone 5. I am looking for a cable to be able to plug my iPhone into RCA jacks. Are there any other companies out there that make a cable like that?? Thanks.

Although I posted this awhile ago, it looks like the challenges were a little more challenging than originally thought - we still haven't seen this part...

I'm sure it is more complicated than this but I assume one can't cheat by using a lightening to 30 pin adaptor then the existing cables right?

I went to the Apple store and tried the lightning pin to 30 pin and then to RCA adapter. Audio came through, but video did not. We tried it in my truck as well as one of their TVs on the floor. I'm not an electronic guy by any means, but there has to be a way to convert this. Who's got the brains and the answers out there??!!!! Come on someone out there is a brainiac at this stuff!!!!!

Problem is that the iPhone 5 video is digital.

You'd have to get an HDMI-analog video converter, then route it via RCA to your deck's input.

so where is the HDMI upgrade on the OGM1? That seems to be the transition in the other head units out there

It'll never happen. The display doesn't support that high of a resolution. You'd be talking about a whole new head unit.

Well sounds like its time for a new design then. The technology is there thats for sure. I know I'd own one in a second. Thats the big thing keeping me from going to an OGM1 right now, is that I run an iPhone 5 and I'd have to do the WDTV conversion to be able to get video from it.
