Extended warantiy

We have an extended warranty on my wife's Honda through the creditunion (don't remember the company name at this time) but they always try to make some excuse as to why the bumper to bumper extended warranty doesn't cover whatever problem we have.

Philosophically speaking it's a bad deal regardless of who carries it.  Why?

For starters: Manufacturers warranty is good to 3 years/36K miles.  Anything that is "manufacturers defect" is very likely to occur or have occurred prior to this milestone.

Most vehicles nowadays make it to 100K before they start nickel and diming you to death...which is exactly when most extended warranties expire.

The other problems that generally occur between 36K & 100K are mostly going to be considered wear & tear items...SELDOM do you experience a legitimate engine or tranny failure in this zone that is not 'blameable' on the owner for lack of maintenance or improper usage. (YES...it can happen....just saying that the ODDS favor the warranty company..not the buyer).

Deductibles usually apply, and most warranty companys require you to take your vehicle to the dealer for service - -again...high dollar on a repair that can be outsourced for much less money.  E.G. GM will replace an engine for @$3600....my cut of that is 33% [$1200].  My local mech will swap one out for $400 after I buy the target motor from GM for $1200.  As you can see a motor swap would cost me $1600 without the warranty, or $1200 with the warranty that I paid $800-$1200 for....  Some bargain!

Once again..it's like Las Vegas...and you are playing the odds.

Good Luck!

I used 1 Source for my 95 Somona. At 40,000, 5 years, things started. Water pump, alternator, radiator, heater core, combo switch, A/C compressor, injector.... The ploicy cost me $900.00 for 24 /24 coverage, $0 deductable. When I traded in for my Silverado, I saved $2800.00 in repairs after I deducted my original $900.00. All repairs were done by the dealership. 1 Source paid each claim by the time I picked up the truck, I never had any problems with the company paying.

I have also had good luck with extended warranties. So far I've purchased four of them and all but one has paid off. The last one's on my new Tahoe, so I haven't used it yet.

The wife had two Cutlasses with brake and tranny problems and I had a new motor put in my truck.

Think about all the "pinging and knocking" that a lot of people are complaining about in the new 5.3 and 6.0 motors. I always get the extra coverage and recommend it to everyone.

As others may say, it's hit or miss.  I got some repairs done on my 92 Jimmy the year and a half I had it.  Nothing so far on the Rado under the extended.

I got a 100,000/7r powertrain warranty on mine from GM for free because of the driveline clunk. Had to file with the bbb to

get it but I'm glad I have it just in case.

I purchased one for my Dodge Stratus I had.  Between the brakes and the severe leaking in the trunk area, resulting in replacing the rear window and trunk lid mine paid for itself.

While doing research before buying my Silverado, I saw a lot of scary stuff on Edmonds about these trucks (shakerado, comes to mind, as does the knocking.)  So I bought it figuring I'm better off with just the feeling that I'm covered if anything big needs fixed.  So far I have 11k miles and no problems but hey I still have 50k miles of coverage left.  A lot can go wrong in 50k miles.  Mine was $1200 and it's a zero deductible 60k mile extended warranty.  Here's to hoping I get my money's worth ot of it, or not!  ;)
