I'm concerned about miles or kms. The interior gets wore out and many other parts besides the engine and transmission and not to mention electrical gremlins.

Yea luckly all of that at first glance seems ok, Like all the lights, heat controls, tow mirrors work as they should

the radio/bose works.. But i know what you guys mean.. Its all in the previous owner! Ive seen 70-80,000 mile

1-3 owner vehicles that were complete trash! Then another good example is a buddy of mines 04 escalade with 310,000

It runs and feels like its new.. this one actually was an older guys personal vehicle.

Im going to make my list of things to repair/replace and check and just drive it and see what happens.

For those who commented on miles.. 200,000 these days really isnt bad 'If' taken care of, I know guys with 8.1,s

over 400,000 ! Hit the key and they go everyday!

Again it valued at $10,000 trade in on nada

And close to $12,000 kbb private party..

So at $6000 even anybody would have been nuts to pass it up, IMO

The 8.1s are monsters, thats for sure. But the problem with private sales is that you will never know how well it was taken care of. The fact that it has a gooseneck, you know the previous owner used it to tow heavy loads. How much and how hard, you will never know for sure. The price is a steal though, hopefully the truck was not abused and gives you many years of enjoyment :)

BTW, what mileage do you get on your sierra 8.1?

...I may look into an aftermarket auto warranty to

cover the drivetrain and such...

Be careful and yes READ THE FINE PRINT!!!

I purchased a drive train warranty for my truck.

After a few weeks or months (can't remember) I read the fine print and was very pi**ed at myself.

They make you do oil changes every 4000 km (yes km not mls) at a certified dealer/shop. You aren't allowed to do it on your own.

And of course any failure related to wear and tear is not covered. So when you break a valve spring or a bearing...it'll always be "related".

Maybe you have more luck.

Just be careful. They're asking for a lot of money.

Or save it and when the time is come take the money to a machine shop to get the engine rebuilt.

so long

Whatever you do, DON'T BUY an aftermarket warranty!!! They aren't worth the trouble. The company will usually send someone out to "inspect" i.e. void the warranty, that can take 2 days... And like j-ten said then most of the warranties only cover up to a certain amount, and things like cracked heads aren't covered sometimes.

IMO, take good care of it and don't worry about it.

sounds like a nice truck. congrats. did you chck for rust? i know a lot of older trucks up here get eaten up pretty badly if the are not maintained or cleaned

Agreed! I have always done my research and dont lose when it comes to buying and selling vehicles! 2 quick examples.

I bought an 03 e450 frd boxtruck with a v-10.. Got the guy down to $3200 sold it year later for $6500

A 94 one owner jeep grand cherokee laredo, $500.. Got offered 1500 and 1800 from another guy

I dont have any expierience with aftermarket warrantys..So that i need some input on, As far asthe truck goes im sure ill be fine.

If it wasnt a 1 owner I may have not went foward with it. Ill post pics as soon as i can and let you know how it is.

Were the miles many highway or around town? And did you ask what he towed? Also since you got one, did the crank position sensor problems in the 8.1 ever get fixed, or is it one of hit or miss issues with the 496 motors?

Posted

I will get more details 2mrw, not sure on the sensor like you say it maybe hit or miss, like the oil burning that affects some worse then others.

The 8.1 motors had some issues with a cranl position sensor going bad. It would act like a fuel issue, and would make the truck basically stall out or run like it had reduced power. I know there had been some issues with it, and once people got the sensor changed it cleared up all the problems.
