Emissions failure

Took vehicle to get emissions inspection today and it failed. There were no fault codes present on the print out given to me by the testing facility, and I got no DTCs with the AutoCal. The only thing I have done is tune it with Blackbear to turn off AFM and yesterday I installed some new tires in 275/60/20 and reflashed to accommodate the new tires size. Gas cap passed test.

 

Taking to dealer tomorrow so they can fix since it's still under warranty but was curious if anyone has any ideas.If it's an O2 sensor, fine, it will be replaced under warranty. But if that's the case, why is the CEL not on? So strange this is occurring with no codes or CEL.

Your readiness monitors were reset when you reflashed for tires. Just drive it some. Then smack the idiot inspector for not being able to tell you that.

Any idea how long it needs to be driven to reset them? I only get one more chance to take it back to them for testing again within the next 15 days without having to pay the test fee again?

Depends on how much and what type of driving you do. If you do a combination of city driving, country roads, and highway driving it will run much quicker. If you do only one type of driving it can take up to a week, or longer. That's modern "progress" for ya ...

Inspector asked if I had replaced the battery before I told them I had reflashed the ECM. Told me to drive it 50-100 miles and come back. Didn't get to do it today before they closed so may have to visit them again next weekend.

 

No govtech4, I'm not going to tell the dealer what to fix.

I wouldn't bring it to the dealer - just go for a drive. It'll end up cheaper in the long run .... and besides .. when they see your tune they'll make a note of that should you have any drivetrain issues in the future.

Passed this time, even though the EVAP was NOT READY. Not sure what that means. O2 sensor was READY this time, guess the driving 80 miles after the reflash allowed it to reset itself. Lesson learned.

Just means the evap test had not completed yet. Anytime you change unhook the battery or flash a tune it will take some time for all of the tests to complete again.

Most states allow one subsystem to be not ready on 2001 and newer. 96-2000 get two. At least in NH.

MA gives you ZERO slack - all or nothing here. It's EXTREMELY frustrating, especially when you have a vehicle your repairing just to sell. Costs $125 just for title & reg, then 6.25% sales tax on top of that based on book value - and they go by Kelley. You could have a rotted out heap, but to them it's still worth $3,000. All just to put it on the road to drive it enough to get the stupid monitors to run ... and if that cuts into the budget, your screwed.

 

Only good thing about this state is '95 and prior are all exempt from emissions - saftey inspection only. Those are my vehicles of choice, if you can find one not all rotted to swiss cheese. Makes life much less stressful repair wise. Cheaper in every way too.

Michigan has no safety or emissions testing and registration is cheap- $155 per year with a special plate and state parks pass too.
