Speaker Upgrade

I bought my truck with a 10 disc under back seat drivers side. I am wanting to add some decent sound on a budget (budget according to the ol lady). I want to keep factory system but change speakers and possibly put box or tube under passenger back seat. Will adding better speakers to doors make that big of difference or am I destined to distortion from the head? I am not into shaling the car next to me, bu I like the sound of bass in the truck alot!  :jester:

The stock speakers, even on the newer 2003 trucks (Bose) are not very high quality when compared to the aftermarket alternatives.  Ok, Bose is high-end, but the aftermarket stuff is better quality.  This will definately add better sound to your truck inside.  Also, you will need to make sure to add an amp to drive the speakers.  Check out Crutchfield, they offer many makes and models of speakers, amps, stereos.  Link is below.  Good luck,

A guy I know who installs stereos for a living told me today that I shouldnt upgrade my speakers. Sounded funny to me as well. He said if I was going to keep the factory head, it was matched with those speakers because of the amount of power that head put out, made sense at the time he was telling me this. He told me I should just get an amp and 2 10's facing down under the back seat. Told me to turn most of the bass off the regular speakers and they would sound alot better and let the 10's do all the thumping. What ya think?  :jester:

I added an Alpine head unit which has a built in crossover.  I used that to filter the bass from my factory speakers and allowed the Bazooka under the back seat to take care of the bass.  The factory speakers do play a lot louder and cleaner when you take out the bass which they aren't made to handle.

I'm thinking of adding a Stealthbox to replace the Bazooka....I'm missing the thump I had with 2-12"s that I had in my car.   :)

Check out www.proboxrocks.com  .  They have different configurations for one or two subs in extended and crew cab trucks.  I just bought the single ten that fits under half of the rear seat.  I used a JL10W3V2-D4 wired in parallel running off a Soundstream 500S and it sounds awesome and, is cheaper than the stealthbox. :)

Unless I am blind, I didn't see any prices.  Can I ask what they wanted for a single 10" or 12" box for an ext. cab?  I also noticed the airspace was a little small (.75 cu ft).  May be tough to find one to fit that without paying a ton for a high-end model.

Thanks

I see that the model you have is the same sub I was looking at as well.  The 10" would work with that box, but a 12" needs more air.  hmm.  I suppose a 10" would be fine also.   :thumb:

I sent them (Probox) an email and they replied very quickly.  $120 + ~$20 shipping to MN for the single 10" enclosure that fits under the ext. cab seat.  Lot cheaper than $250 for a Q-logic box from Crutchfield.  Got me thinking now...

Firetiger,  I paid around 160 shipped to me.  The minimum air for the 10W3V2 is .625 in a sealed box.  I chose the 10 over the 12 because of this reason, but there are 12s  out there that will go into a .75 air space.   Mine is impressive with one 10 , you may want to consider the double 10 box and mount your amps behind the rear seat.    For info on these boxes call 1-800-919-3313 and ask for Gerald or go to www.proboxrocks.com

What is the Probox made of? I think JL Audio's Stealthbox is some kind of fiberglass? MTX's looks like plastic.  Just wondering if Probox uses the same type of stuff or is using 3/4" MDF?  The web site doesn't say.

I was set on a JL Audio, until I saw the $500-600 price tag. Then I had pretty much decided on building my own box and just buying the JL Audio sub until I saw this thread on the Probox. Now I'm wondering which is better.  ???

Deez-

I checked out your amp rack pictures.  Looks great.  How did you attach to the rear cab wall?  There is that much room behind the seat?  I have one amp that I've been thinking about stuffing back there when I go for the sub box, wasn't sure how to go about it though.  Does the back seat come off pretty easy?

The only bad thing about being back there is no way to adjust after the seat is reattached.  A sub will change characteristics quite a bit after a good 10-20 hrs into break-in.

thanks
