Wire Arc?

To be honest, I have used Champions in GM engines before without issue. It was however a 95 bonneville with the 3.8, but that engine was temperamental on plugs also. If you ran Bosch in it, it would throw a fit while Champions ran just fine.

Since I'm not new to the whole this engine likes this plug better than the other, it doesn't surprise me that the ACD plugs work much better than the Champions. Without coming here however, I wouldn't have found out that GM changed gaps and I would still be diagnosing this thing. Even if this didn't solve my issue, it would have helped my peace of mind to know the plugs are now gapped to spec and I would have changed them anyways.

There is no dought to your statement as I also ran Champion plugs in vehicles and they ran just fine but those were vehicles in the 70s but todays vehicles you stick with OEM.

I run copper core NGK's in mine and they work just fine.....it came from the factory w/ Nippondenso plugs. This 5.3 has never seen an AC Delco plug in it's 112K life.

Most ACDelco plugs are made by champion. The rest are NGK. If their is a row of diagonal hash marks on the steel part of the plug just below the six sided 'tool engagement' area, it is a champion. With that in mind they may be a unique AC design manufactured by an outside vendor (champion).

Bad news bears. Sitting in a parking lot idling today and it started stumbling again. Had it read and p0300 showed up. Ugh, good news is I had a warranty on the wires so those will get switched out along with checking the plugs again. Not a happy camper.

What makes you think this is related to plugs or wires? Didn't you post something about having a rich condition on this vehicle prior to changing the plugs/wires? Didn't you also say you had 2 champion plugs that were white when you pulled them after only a short time? You never did say what brand plug wires you went with either. I don't buy the AC Delco plug or wire theories here, I've been running NGK's and MSD plug wires on my truck w/o any issues whatsoever for years. I think maybe it's time to turn your attention to your previous issue.

The reason I think it's wires is because when I was changing the wires yesterday, one went on really easy with no audible click. Also, since the truck ran beautifully until this afternoon and the only thing that has changed since yesterday is plugs leads me to believe that I either messed up a plug or a wire isn't contacting right.

When I picked up wires, they had one brand available and it was whatever oreillys house brand is. I would switch them to a different brand but since they are warrantying them for free, I will give them another shot.

You are correct, I did have a random misfire about a month ago related to the O2 sensor on the passenger side. The two white plugs I pulled yesterday were cylinders 1 and 3, 3 being worse than one. When I pulled the plugs originally, all passenger plugs were black.

Did you change the O2 sensor or discover why it was running rich on that side? And John while plugs may not be a big deal in this case, he was using a plug with an incorrect gap which has shown to cause the symptom he described originally. Thus the plug swap

If your problem persists, I'd look into:

intake gaskets for leaks

Take a fuel pressure reading

Both can throw P0300 code

O2 sensor was changed, CEL went off when I changed it along with the P0300 from about a month ago. I also changed plugs and wires then. Truck ran fine for about two weeks then I started having idle issues. When I pulled the plugs to switch to the AC Delcos last night the plugs on the passenger side looked fine.

When checking for codes, I specifically looked for an O2 sensor code today but there wasn't one.

I will look into that next. I just find it weird that I drove it to work this morning (about 30 min) and had no issues, even idled it in the parking lot for a bit to make sure. Drove it to my destination after work (about 30 min), was waiting for someone to come out and after idling for 15 min it started to stumble again. This time bad enough to throw a code.

My intention isn't to throw parts at it but like I said, they were willing to swap the plug wires for free and since that is the only thing I messed with since yesterday besides plugs, I figured I would give it a shot.

The plot thickens I see LOL......

I understand the plug gap txab but you've got to remember I'm driving an 02 that I bought brand new and it too had the requirements for the ,060 plug gap before GM changed it. The only issue I ever noticed from it was a slight, and I mean slight, miss at idle.....the denso plugs that came from the factory looked perfect when I pulled them. I'm with you as far as checking the intake for leaks and the fuel pressure next.

Couple more questions:

What led you to an O2 sensor from a P0300 code?

Was it a pre or post cat sensor?

Was the code erased with a scan tool after the sensor was changed?

Were the two plugs that were white the ones that were loose?

You're on your 3rd set of plugs and 2nd set of wires right now since you first experienced the P0300 correct?

Also dont froget the easy stuff remove the battery cables and give them a good cleaning along with the battery terminals.

The original P0300 was coupled with a code for Bank 2 Sensor 1, pre-cat. Once I changed it, both codes went away originally.

The code was not erased with a scan tool, after three consecutive starts, it disappeared on its own.

Not counting the original plugs and wires, the AC Delcos were the second set and once I swap the wires, it too will be the second set.

The two that were loose were cylinders 4 and 8.

Update:

Went to change the wires this morning, upon opening the hood and starting to pop off wires and checking plugs. The wire that I had concerns about had completely fallen off and a few others were questionable on how easy they came off.

All of the new ones had a nice "click" when putting them on, started it up and no more stumbling. I haven't driven it yet but will soon, I still need to return the old wires. Will report back once I do.

Thanks for the help everyone!

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
