Transmission Issues

hi all, I've got a 2003 2500HD 4x4 auto with the 6.0L motor and over the past few months at times I've noticed some whining noise like a loud fan coming from what I thought was the tranny. Well today on the drive home after going around a tight corner I heard a bit of a clunk noise and voila, drive didn't work. I shifted into 3rd and was able to continue driving. When I got the chance I pulled over, shifted into park and back into drive, I could feel the transmission engage but when I gave it gas the whirring noised was there and the truck didin't move at all. I then tried 3rd and things were fine, no noise and the truck would shift properly from 1st to 3rd. When I tried reverse I had the same issues as drive, I could feel the transmission engage into reverse but when I gave it gas just the whirring noise and no movement.

So, I'm hoping the whole tranny isn't toast as things are fine when I put it into 3rd and drive. Before this I haven't had any issues with the transmission. I did have the tranny fluid changed about 6 months ago though and when I checked the fluid level I noticed that it was overfilled, about a 1/2" past the full mark on the tranny dipstick.

Any thoughts/suggestions as to what I might be facing here? Any help is appreciated.

How the tranny fluid look? 30 years ago, those symptoms might indicate a trans service was over due, perhaps even low fluid... but I expect you service your trans on schedule and check the fluid level occasionally.

If it works from 1st thru 3rd when you put it in 3 on the column but not in D wouldn't that make it an electrical issue not hard part issue?

If it was hard part issue it sounds like t/c jacking up IMO

that complaint makes no sence to me either ,,,,,

his first thing to do is have a tech road test it and maybe scan it ,,,,,,,

internet and transmissions dont belong together imo could be anything as with every complaint here lol

like I said, 30 years ago.... NO internet, no problem. BTW, I serviced many transmissions that had low fluid levels, very dirty filters and they ran great after a service. It doesn't mean that damage was not already done and major repair work was coming sooner than later, but like I said, low fluid, dirty filter can cause very similar issues on older transmissions... and 30 years ago, I would tell you to take your scanner and put it back in your fancy storage box....

i get what you're sayin ,but these young people jump and change the oil and filter ,and it doesn't do anything ,,,thats my message ,,all good Hawk, electronic everything is the new world ....especially in automobiles ,,,

90% of complaints here have an electrical control of a module of some sort imo

Agree! and I'm willing to bet that that transmission has never been serviced or scanned....

the truck is one year new to me so I don't know if the tranny has previously been serviced or not.

i took it in to a service shop and they did a road test to confirm what i told them; no-go in drive or reverse.

no CEL so it's not throwing any codes and nothing in the DIC either.

their experience suggests internal issues so it's in the shop now and i'll have to see what happens.

unfortunately i've had way too much other shit going on with my life that at this point i don't care, just get it fixed.

at the least the local shop i brought it too has an excellent rep and has won numerous consumer choice awards so i don't have to worry about getting rooked.

talked to the shop this morning. TC is done, couple of the solenoids are done, one of the bands is done and a few other things that I don't remember. by the time it's said and done the final bill will be close to $3K. at least with it being my work vehicle the bill becomes a write-off for me so that makes it a bit easier to swallow.
