Gate Protection From Trailer Tongue?

I guess I dont understand how the OP is having an issue. When I hook up to a trailer, if the jack isnt in the way, I can drop the tailgate and have plenty of room between the coupler and the tailgate. Maybe you just need to invest in a lower drop for you hitch.

The jack handle on my trailer wouldn't quite let the tail gate open on my truck, so when moving the jack wasn't an option and with the help of my neighborhood machinest, I made up a new drive shaft with a removable handle for the jack. Not only will the tail gate open, it also cleaned up the look of the trailer.
