6.0 MPG

I have posted multiple times on this subject, for my truck I get 12-14 mixed city, and on the hwy it's 16-17mpg. That driving steady and doing right around 68-70 mph. Once you start driving about 72+mph the mileage drops down to 14-15 mpg. Also my truck is a basic 2wd, LS model, roll up windows, no power seats,locks etc. it's got the rubber floor. It's real only options are cloth seats, cruise control, Dual climate AC and a CD player. And when I got it weighed it was around the 5800pds mark. It does have a Charliey Wheatley tune, bed cover, and full synthetics all away around. I honestly think it all depends on your driving style. If I tried very hard I am sure I could get single digits in the city driving :)!

I went from 10% ethanol 89 octane to 87 octane no ethanol blend and added a CAI. Went from 10mpg (on a good day) to 13.

 

Same job, same driving routine, onlything different is the mentallity of someone hearing something they dont like.

 

Well ummm there's your mileage difference, you went from 10% ethanol to no ethanol so there's your mpg increase, the more ethanol the worse your mileage is. The CAI did nothing.

I had a 2000 HD and the best I seen on a given day was maybe 12 MPG. That was with a 4:10 gear. I added a corsa exhaust and an airaid MIT to it. I did see an increase to around 13 - 13.5 mpg. I now have a 2010 HD and see around 16 -17 highway. This like stated above is keeping it at 65-70, once over 70+ forget it. This truck has a 3:73 gear also. I know the only thing I'm doing to this truck is add a corsa exhaust and a blearbear tune.

I never once stated that the main factor in getting a whopping 2-3 mpg increase was from the CAI did I? I am fully aware that the change of fuel was the main factor. I didnt think that installing a CAI would hurt the gas mileage either... I did 2 things at once, I am ashamed..

I'm only worried because I have a 60 round trip everyday, and I'm just thinking gas is going to drain my wallet, if it is the case I might have to consider getting something more fuel efficient like a TDI or something.

Gas will drain your wallet. A tune, CAI, exhaust and everything else you can throw at it will only at best gain you a couple MPG's at best (and as you can see, its very arguable at that). You have to weigh the cost to benifit allowance as to what you will get back on what it cost you to get it. For the love of modding its priceless. For the efficient buck to mpg your better off buying something that sips the fuel and driving your truck on the weekends. Good luck!

Its no big deal there chupe, its just in your first post you said you installed a CAI and ran 87 octane and your mileage increased 2-3 mpg, you didn't say you stopped using ethanol. Its all cool.

Haven't towed enough with mine long haul to log towing mileage, all short hops thus far. Empty or loaded I get 12 city 14.5 Highway. 4:10's with a 6.0 and 4L80e. Before this truck I had a 2nd. Generation Tacoma, V-6, Double cab, TRD.. It got 18 regardless of city or Highway. I moved to the bigger truck because I needed more room and towing hauling ability.

 

I have met a few people in campgrounds that were towing small travel trailers with Tacoma's like the one I had. They were averaging about 6- 7mpg while towing! Seems they had to have their foot in it most of the time to climb hills. This and hauling things that made my Tacoma bottom out rather easily caused me to seek more truck.

 

I have had my entire family, 6 of us in my GMC, 600lbs. of flooring materials, another 200lbs. of shooting gear plus all my tools and recovery gear in my tool box, probably another 200 lbs.

 

Doesn't even phase it, I did not get my truck for mileage but ability, what it can do. Remember that really is what a truck is for.

I've only had my 2010 2500HD 4x4 CC 6.0 for 7 months but with 30,000 miles on it, 3.73 gears and everything stock, I average 12-13 MPG with everyday driving. That's about 20 miles interstate and 2 miles city driving. Haven't towed long distance yet with it. Unloaded with only the family on a long trip to the Smokies, I did get 14 MPG once. I know a tune won't really help mileage, but I sure don't like the throttle response and shifting. I hope one day to get a Blackbear tune for that.

My 1500hd has the 3.73 gears and I to get around the 12 to 13 mpg mark, it's a lot of truck its going to get what it gets. I to was looking at getting a box programmer not so much for the mpg factor, but the shift points and calibrate my speedo for the bigger tires. I had an 05 f150 supercrew in the past with a 5.4, I did the CAI, TB spacer, chip, and exhaust after it was all said and done .5 increase in mpg if that. Which still only put me about 14.5mpg mark and I thought the truck was a slug.

    • My post above is the direct reason for my outsized interest in keeping what I have for as long as possible. My memory isn't as short as some. 
    • I don't think so. 😏 Cars? Our experience will diverge there as well. I was buying cars with 200K (1970's) when I started and quite a few were pretty solid cars. (My early stuff was 1964 to 1968)  Some stinkers but not the dismal picture painted above. Now that said, yes, a dealer wouldn't talk to you if your car had more than 60K on the clock and lot cars were 60K or less except the back row where 100-120K was the auction bought for dirt for us poor losers. Kids in my county were not allowed to wear long pants if they couldn't rebuild and repair every part of that beast.    I will agree that many parts are now better. Alternators and charging systems are an envy. But I replaced few water pumps or power steering pumps then. Rebuilt carburetors but replaced few. Mufflers are another place of OEM improvement. Stainless?     • The thermometer has been in my wife's 2008 envoy, my sons 2016 chevy, my friends 2020 1500 silverado all showing cooler readings. It's not the guage.
    • Have a question concerning trim levels. Ive not bought a new vehicle since 2006, and I have decided on a 2500 gmc pro or silverado custom. For anyone that has one of these 2 trim levels have you regretted not stepping up to the LT or SLE. I look at things as the more electronics the more problems to arise. I love the look of the old school gauges on the dash as well. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. 
    • If that guage has a way to adjust [hex on bottom], put that thing in a glass full of ice, put water in, put your gage in, let it sit for 3 minutes or so, and set it to 33 degrees.
