I just bought my 2014 Sierra SLT All Terrain 4x4 yesterday and it didn't come with the Integrated Brake Control which I need ! I pulled out my window sticker and all it says is " Trailering Equipment Package" I don't see JL1 anywhere. While reading through this thread I've become confused on what I am going to need to put either an aftermaket controller on my truck or if possible buy the OEM brake controller.... Please help ! lol

You will need to buy an after market brake controller such as the Tekonsha P3. Plus, the GM made harness 23184088 that comes with great installation instructions. There's talk you can get your money back for the harness from your selling dealer. I have yet to do so.

Don't be fooled by a fast talking salesman that you can use the in dash GM controller. It's not true.

And if he uses the term "plug and play" for anything.........bolt out the door. LOL.

There is not a plug is present under the dash, but the needed wires are already run. You will connect the brake controller wiring with the vehicle wiring already present under the dash."

 

So I guess I will just order The Tekonsha P3 controller with the standard pigtail.

Nope.

 

Although the Tekonsha P3 comes with the standard wiring pigtail (mine did), it will not work on the 2014 Sierra. Only the 2310488 harness will work. This harness has the standard plug on one end that will fit into your aftermarket controller, the other end fits into a special port on a junction block mounted on your interior side of the firewall. It's just ahead of the e-brake pedal and there's a black plastic cover with 4 latches that hold it to the junction block. You will need to take the cover off and eather disgard (*) it or I bored a hole in it and placed a rubber grommet large enough to allow the junction block connector to fit through it so it can plug into the specific port as mentioned on the excellent instructions that come with the 2310488.

 

(*)I'm unsure what the other folks on this site/forum do with their covers?

 

The eTrailer.com answer is typical of what I found with three GM dealers back in September when I started going through what you are going through now.....they ASSUME the 2014 GMC is the same as the 2013 and earlier GMC's with regards to aftermarket trailer towing brake controller wiring under dash. Like most of the 2014 truck in general, it's not the same as 2013's.

 

There's lot's to learn. You are on a very good forum to help you, I might add.

At your local GM dealer.

 

Maybe get your salesman to order it for you. Then maybe the dealership will pay for it? Plus, your sales person will learn about this component and he will be informed for his next customers. That way it's a win-win for all.

Well, the snow up here has cleared enough for trip with my Coachman Catalina and using my Tekonsha P3 controller. Everything went great. And while traveling I thought it would be better to have the Tekonsha break than anything break or fail on the JL1 built in feature on my Sierra (which never was installed at the factory level).

 

Worse case scenario......the Tekonsha P3 gets thrown away and a new one bought for $169.00. The JL1 fails, a person could loose the use of the truck for a month? Something to think of!

I just bought a 2014 Z71/All Terrain and it came with the Trailer Brake Module Harness ( not the controller). It was in with the manuals /keys/etc. did the earlier 2014's not come with one?
