Aftermarket Brake Controller

Not sure why my name posted as eaglelake...but this is the setup I described earlier.

We'll, I just put in a trailer brake controller, and I'm happy to report that this '14 was the easiest to put one in a GM truck in a long time. Last two 900's, had to find wires under the hood, run them to posts, find wires under the dash, put in fuses, etc... This time, plug in the pigtail, wire to controller, done, yeahhhhh.

Now I'm assuming the 12v charge wire is working because the fuse is in already. I didn't check with a multimeter, but will soon before I take the trailer out.

I just ordered the P3 from etrailer.com, I'll probably used their harness too, plug in on each end. I haven't look at a mount location yet, right of the wheel would keep it out of the way.

Hey everyone, I have recently bought an aftermarket trailer brake controller. I am just wondering if anyone else has any ideas about mounting. I would prefer to not drill into any plastic. If anyone has any good tips or ideas and/or pictures of where they have one mounted I would much appreciate the help

If you don't use your ebrake often you can mount it like this, you can still use it, it's just a little tight getting your foot on it. You will need to drill in the under panel to attach, but you can't see it. Sorry for the crappy picture.

I bought a Tekonsha P3 and since the install I noticed when using my phone with the bluetooth I would notice voices sometimes would sound gargily and when I would look at the signal bar I had full antenna strength. I thought it had to do with the intella link but then today I unplugged the P3 and the Bluetooth work flawless again. I do remember in the directions not to put your phone within a foot of the controller. I have the center console and put my phone just under the radio. I would say I'm all of 1' away but it's not far enough. Just thought I would pass this along so if you store you phone under the radio you might want to mount the controller on the left side of the steering wheel rather then the right.

I just received a package from GM, not the dealer, that had the brake controller harness in it. Letter apologized for any inconvienience. Interesting since I never asked for it.

Do you have to drill into the plastic part of the dash to mount it this way?

 

I am trying to avoid drilling into the plastic.

Subscribing to this topic as I was also told today that the Factory Integrated brake controller could not be added post purchase.

After reading this topic, on 4/17/2014 I went to my dealership where I purchased my truck. I told them I have the trailer towing package and did not get the harness (P/N23184088 that goes for $34.00). They just gave me a free one without even asking my name. I also had my VIN to verify my claim if it was needed. Thanks for the information on this topic. You saved me $34 plus tax for this item.Now I just have to get a controller to complete the job. I would like to see where people mounted it to get a better idea for mine. Please show some photos. Thanks again.

 

Ok, so this must be what the parts in my glove box are. We didn't know what its for.

Ok so, I've got the 23184088 in the glove box.

 

The dealership told me today that I can not use the $69 OEM controller that goes to the left of the steering wheel, because I do not have a JL1.

 

When asked what a JL1 is, he told me "its just easier to go aftermarket."

 

So what is a JL1 and IS it possible to add the OEM trailer brake controller to the dash like I saw in other trucks I trst drove???

Disregard. I see that the JL1 cannot be added aftermarket.

 

I also see that the local guy was gonna charge me $150 to install a trailer brake controller, when I can spend $140 for the Tekonsha P3 and with two clicks install it myself. Nice!
