Aftermarket Brake Controller

their is something wrong with your link.

I think there was something wrong, it kept redirecting me to another brake controller thread here on the board.

It's ok, the harness has sold.

I bough the one you posted about but he's since relisted another. It had a "Make Offer" and I submitted $15 and it was accepted immediately, so he must have an acceptable price range to accept or decline in the listing.

Has anyone tried or thought to try hooking the "free" factory wiring harness up to an integrated trailer brake controller from the factory? I bought the factory controller because I found the "plug" in the upper LH dash after I bought my 2014 sierra double cab 2WD from a dealer. After some research, I'm finding that my truck doesn't have the necessary JL1 to make it work. If anyone knows the wiring schematic for the plug that attaches to the factory controller, I'd be willing to try to use the free wiring adapter from GM, that I picked up from the dealer, to try and see if the factory controller would work. No sense in buying an aftermarket controller and wiring it up to the GM wiring adapter if the factory controller could be, right? any help would be appreciated, and I'll post any updates that I find.

My dealer pulled document #PIT5228. The document states " A harness is not currently available but can be made from GM PN#15085418" "Provide this one time to customers at NO CHARGE" My dealer ordered the part and followed the procedure to build the correct harness. If someone needs a copy of this document I'll gladly send it to you. FREE HARNESS !!!!!

Why why why are we fighting to get trailer brake controller to working??? This has been a major let down by the manufactures for years. They talk of how much weight they can tow, but can't without modifications.

If the truck comes with towing package it should come with built in factory controller.

Trucks have come for years with towing packages and no factory controller. Manufacturers have just recently started offering these as factory options. Some people still prefer the aftermarket controllers since that is what they are use to. GM has since fixed this issues as referenced in a previous post.

So what's the difference between tow package and Max tow package? What does this mean?

I assume I just have the tow package with this factory controller? u8ureva8.jpg

Well I wont put all the blame on the manufacturer for not forcing the brake controller on trucks shipped with trailer tow package.

The dealers need to order trucks with brake controllers. I think they don't because they try to keep the cost down as much as possible. But look at the headache for several months before GM came up with a fix.

So I've got the controller wired up properly as far as I see it. I can
engage my trailer brakes with the manual brake button on the controller
but not with the pedal. We've tested the line going into the controller
and there is current going in but no current coming out unless I'm using
the manual control on the box. This leads me to believe there is now
something internally wrong with my controller itself, unless someone
here can tell me about having the same experience, which I've yet to
see. We checked the current at the actual plug AND in front of the
connection between the controller and the GM wire harness. This tells
me it's not the harness and it's not my connections since the manual
button works but the brake pedal does not. The only thing I can think of
left is that there is a bad connection in my controller. Am I missing
something?

Should be some up and down arrows on the controller. They are to turn up the intesity of the "pedal" side of the controller. Turn it up a bit. Then jack one wheel up on your trailer (safely) and get an assistant to turn the wheel while you apply the brake. It should lock up that wheel. Adjust intesity as required while moving the trailer.

Happy trailering!

for those who want to hook up an aftermarket brake controller it is possible. GM has a document on what to do.

To connect a trailer brake controller, a harness is needed that will plug into the X6 position of the Left I/P Junction Block (X61A), located under driver’s side dash near the parking brake pedal assembly

  1. Remove the Red, Black, large Blue, and Brown terminated circuits from the connector of harness 15085418, shown below (2). Discard the brown 6-way connector and the small LT Blue wire from harness. 3610485.giftif.gif
  2. Obtain the X6 4-way trailer brake harness connector body (WPC724) shown below (white connector).
  3. 3610484.giftif.gif
  4. Install the Red (3), Black (4), large Blue (5), and Brown (6) terminated circuits, removed in step 1, into the white connector body, as shown below.
