Bike related question

So I'm riding my bike to class today and as I go up the big hill, which I go up every day, I notice that the harder I push on the pedals, the more the chain seems skip.  I don't know exactly what's wrong but is there a possibility that the chain or the gear is causing this slippage?  It's getting worse every time I ride but only happens in the higher gears.  Any helps would be great!

I would guess something is wrong in the rear derailer or the chain.  Maybe the tension spring is getting weak, or it needs adjusted or the chain has a couple of stiff links.

Sounds like your chain is getting worn along with your gears. Try cleaning it off really well and then relubricate it. See if that helps any.

The front Derailer on my 2001 Specialized Hard Rock messes up when I want to shift the highest Front gear,itmakes the chain skip alot when it's trying to go up, it ends up falling back down to the gear it was already in. I have to mess around with the rear gears to "assist" it.

 

I'm not exactly sure how to diagnose yours though. Is it happening when you shift?

Sounds like some stiff links in your chain. Oil it up good and try to work out any stiff links.

I would guess something is wrong in the rear derailer or the chain.

Thats what I'm thinking, I had the same problem on my Trek 4900 and it ended up that my shifter cable had stretched just enough to make it do that.

Sounds like it could be one of a couple of things. First off you may need a new chain. They stretch over time causing a misalignment or jumping on the gears. The gears may need adjustment. A comon symptom of this is the gears jumping when you are putting pressure on the pedals. I hope this helps.

A combination of frame flex from the high pedal effort, and a probably misadjusted deurailer causes the chain to occasionaly catch the next highest cog on the gear cassette causing it to jump.

 

I think you should make sure none of the gear teeth are bent.  Maybe replace the chain.  And adjust the deurailer.

You got some good advise from the guys. There are adjustment screws on the derailour that will help center the chain on the correct gears. It's best to have that adjusted by a good shop tech. When the chain wont engage the big gear for instance that is an indication that the cable needs adjustment. The cables do streach with use. Have it repaired immediately. You can damage the gears and the chain by slipping them and replacement is expensive. Other good advise is to shift while peddeling. You're going to throw the chain a lot if you keep shifting to the smaller front gears while giopng up a steep incline, shift before you get to that steep section.

 

I've given my Specialized Rock Hopper with Manitou front suspension tio the wife and I ride  GT  anodized aluminum front and rear suspension. Rock Shox Judy's on the front are nice.
