broken hood latch

Just picked my truck up last night, a 97 sierra ext cab 4x4. High km 408000km interior is in rough shape body isnt bad one bad area on box but anyway. The hood release switch is broken, wondering how i can open the hood and ultimately fix the switch. i tried fishing around for the latch with a screwdriver but had no luck. any chance if i got some pliers and pulled on the cable it would open?

If the cable still hooked up pliers or small vice grips will work. If not you will have to remove bolts on latch.
