crc/de-squeak brake conditioning treatment

Has anybody ever used this stuff? I put on some akebono pads and acdelco advantage rotors last week and for the first 5 days they were quiet. Today we were running errands and they started squealing at every stop.

I'm going to take them off and make sure everything is ok but thought about trying this stuff.

Anybody used it before with good results?

Yea. They were perfectly quiet and now they squeal. Everything is greased right and bedded properly. Not sure what the deal is with them.

I've done my dads avalanche and sisters envoy brakes with no problems so I'm familiar with gm brakes.

I even used acdelco advantage pads and rotors on both.

The link you posted is not working but usually those sprays only quiet things down for a few miles before the noise comes back. It might be worth a try if all else fails though. As far as the brake job, Did you apply anti-seize to the brake pad ears where they slide onto the caliper mounting brackets? Did the pads you bought come with new caliper hardware? Did you clean the caliper, bracket, pistons and everything else thoroughly with a brush and brake cleaner? Did the akebono pads come with that plastic wrap on the backs of the pads that you had to peel off? They usually do but I have never used akebono for a truck application. Brake noise can be so many things, it usually has to do with the pads and calipers being lubed properly though. If nothing ever seems to fix the noise, just try a different brand of pads next time. Some pad / rotor / vehicle combinations just make noise and that is all l there is to it. As a last ditch effort, try to find the GM service manual (not aftermarket but THE actual manual at the GM dealerships) for your truck and see how it says to do brake jobs. You might have missed a small step or trick GM uses to mimimize brake noise.

I was not aware that akebono were cheap aftermarket. Everything I've geard says they are great pads and are the OEM pads on silverados. The only part that might not be OEM are the advantage rotors.

Akebono pads are fine, i think something else is going on here since you have had problems with all kinds of pad/rotor combinations. Are you torquing the slide pins to spec when you re-install? I'm assuming you are lubing them as well. Is something getting onto the rotors and contaminating them? Look for leaks, brake fluid, cv axle grease, is the caliper piston seal leaking?

Refresh my memory, did the squealing start before or after you started all these brake combinations?

Nope. Everything is lubed fine and nothing on the rotors. Degreased everything and all is lubed. Everything is torqued to spec as well.

140. No play. There is no noise when driving, turning, etc. only stopping. If I stop hard it doesn't do it and only seems to make noise towards th end of the stop. Would different rotors work? Maybe some acdelco durastops?

I spun the wheel when it was on stands and there is no noise when turning the wheels by hand.

So when you spin the wheel by hand the pads are not dragging on the rotors what so ever? There should be a slight amount of drag from the pads with the brake not applied.

Posted

There is a slight drag but the wheels spin freely.

There is no glaze on the rotors but not sure on the pads. Can I scuff the pads with something to remove the glaze if there is any?

Edit: I found a PDF this morning for AC Delco Durstop rotors on ways to eliminate noise and it said DO NOT clean the rotor with brake cleaner but to use dish soap. Not sure why they say this but I might give it a try tonight after work. Even though I have advantage rotors it can't hurt to try. I originally cleaned them with brake cleaner for installing them.

Yes you can scuff up the pads with garnet paper preferably, but if all you have is sandpaper use a fine grit.

That AC delco PDF is probably talking about cleaning them when you take them out of the package to remove any packing grease. Brake clean wouldn't hurt anything, but you can give the soap a try.

I lightly scuffed the pads with garnet paper but they looked fine. No grooves or glazing that I could tell.

I cleaned the rotors with dish soap and water so we'll see how that works tomorrow. I double checked that everything had enough grease and it did. I'm beginning to wonder if it might be the rears but I just replaced those with acdelco durastop shoes.

The noise is more of a high pitched squeal/squeak that makes me think front brakes.

I had some old rotos lying around so I did a test. First I cleaned them with brake cleaner and then cleaned them with soap and water. When I did that, the water was nasty. So much more gunk and dust came off with the dish soap than just the cleaner.
