Hill Decent Control

I've used the hill descent several times, and it works great for short, steep hills. I have had it turn off on its own though, not a great feeling on a rocky hillside. Has anyone else had this experience?

We have had this problem every time we have taken our truck hunting in steep terrain. It is not a great feeling and very unsafe. We have told our dealer and they seem to think we are crazy, We then contacted GM and they have said each and every time they are working on it. The service manager at our dealer said he too had a problem, but called GM and they said it was normal. We hope to find others so we can fight this issue before someone gets killed.

Thanks for confirming. I had to explain what hill decent is to my service manager. Taking my truck in soon for several little issues, I'll bring this up again too. If you hear of a fix, please post.

How fast do you think you were you going when it turned off?

Going by memory, but I believe around 5 mph. Hill decent was engaged for around a quarter to a half a mile, then turned off and gave a "service abs" error message. Happened to me a few times like that, so I've only used hill decent for very short stretches since. I haven't seen any mention of a distance limit.

I just experienced using the Hill Descent Control feature this afternoon while I was helping a friend move. His house sits high up on a hill in metro Atlanta and the driveway is quite steep and it slightly twists up the hill to the house. I switched to the Off-Road DIC screen and checked my approach angles, it ranged from 17-23 degrees. With a full truck bed I crested the top of the driveway on the way down at 3-5 mph and Hill Descent Control took care of the rest. Awesome first time use of the feature on a driveway that was 70-80 yards in distance. I figured I would be fine manually braking my way down but the HDC gave me some extra confidence, especially since the drive is old and covered in loose gravel. I did notice the sound of the ABS kicking in, maybe the solenoids that trigger. I am unfamiliar with the system but seems pretty easy to use. Hopefully I don't experience it cutting of and throwing a service message like other on this thread have mentioned.
