If they grind off the existing hinge weld and weld a new one on, they will have to repaint some portion of the bed. Since you are planning to get a spray in bedliner, they will scuff the heck out of that paint before spraying it. So what is the big deal about welding?

You do realize that if you paint your truck and do any of this stuff to it that once time comes to resell it that the dealers will take paint samples. If the paint sample levels don't match the rest of the truck, the dealer will accuse you of being in a wreck and that you painted the truck in order to cover the damage. This will seriously affect your resale value, because they'll claim other dealers will want paint samples too, etc...

I've never seen or heard of this, it may happen but I would say BS.

I have worked for dealers for the last 16 years and not one of them tested the paint, even the Cadillac dealer didn't do that. Nor did they do it on lease turns

The tailgate hinge is in a concealed area and you never see it once the tailgate is up.

there is a paint thickness guage that uses a magnetic aperatuse to measure how many mils the paint is. A repaint is typically not substantial enough to make that big of a difference if applied correctlly since you are taking thickness off in the sanding process. The paint would more than likely do a soft edge on the jamb and you would never notice it. I have done soft edges in the middle of a pannel and used a blending agent to melt in and when buffed it is invisable.

I guess they do it for high end cars...I drove lexues, mercedes, bmws and bentlys for the past 5 years so they always looked at paint samples.

I know people who drive $100k Range Rovers, Skyline GT-R's, BMW's, Corvette's etc. and I have never heard of them testing the paint

I own a GT-R, and they do take paint samples, especially if you do a trade in.

 

I own a range rover sport supercharged now, a GT-R, Lexus LS460 and a mercedes benz CLS550. Trust me, they take paint samples of these cars.
