oil usage??

any issues with GM's using oil because of the FMS? someone was telling me the cylinders fill up with oil when the FMS kicks on? first i'm hearing of it. also said the aluminum block is no good for other reasons.

I didn't have any. some guy here at work has a GM. He was telling me this. I figured if anyone had issues, we'd see them here. I was just checking.

You have 150+ posts so you've been here more than a day. Pinned to the very top of this forum section is a thread specifically about trucks using oil and it is over 30 pages long. Been there for a couple years.

I just don't understand the mentality that you should never have to add oil..... a quart per thousand miles isn't too much to ask.... the quick lube here (I don't use them but still) will top off for free in between changes within reason....

So your are saying it's perfectly normal to have to add oil in between changes on any vehicle?

Every owners manual I've seen has some range for oil loss between servicing. Between all the complex stuff oil has to do these days and the long service intervals I can't say I'm surprised.

A quart per 1000 miles not too much to ask? Hell, I have owned several semi truck diesels with engines from 12.7L to 15L that if they used that much it would be way past time for an overhaul. My present factory rebuilt 12.7L Detroit (also known as "leaktroits"), doesn't use a quart in 15,000 mile oil changes. Really difficult to imagine a 5.3L engine using a quart in 1000 and considering it "normal". A 454 V8 I had in a '98 2500 didn't even use a quart in 4000 miles.

 

That being said, because I disabled the AFM on my 5.3L from the moment I brought it home new, and I installed an oil separator catch can on the PCV, it is typical for my 5.3 to use 1/2 pint in 6000 miles. That is more like it.

Unacceptable IMO, guy spends $60k on a new truck up here in Canada. Buy a truck that burns oil? Lol...I've stated my views on this in a couple threads. I for one think it's ridiculous.

      You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

      You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.

      2026 6.6 L5P oil cooler leaking oil at 4,000 miles

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?
