drivetrain pinging

My 2010 Silverado 4x4 5.3 6 speed with a 3.08 gears is pinging when throttle is applied. It is very noticeable during parking lot maneuvers and while towing. its been to the dealer 4 times and they keep saying its fixed and it never is... they kept saying cross members were loosening but I'm not buying it. Any ideas?

My '07 pings under heavy throttle, and has since it broke in. Seems even worse with the Hypertech program. I've tried both the premium fuel and regular fuel maps, and still pings on both. Left in on regular since it seems to perform better .. and of course, it's quite a bit cheaper.

Only 66k on this one, so we'll see what happens. My old 350's used to ping too (not quite as bad, as you could adjust it out), but those engines couldn't be killed. I don't have the same faith in the 5.3 though ...

thanks for the input but I should mention its a drive-line issue... They have "tightened cross members" and replaced the drive shaft and rebuilt the transfer case... no positive results

Ahh gotcha - different ping. ;) That's the trouble with internet diagnosis.

Could be something in the rear differential - that's about the only other part that hasn't been touched here, and something you'd definitely notice in the parking lot, as one wheel is spinning at a different speed when turning - even more so in tight parking lot turns.

Yeah, there's that too ....

Good luck either way.

Does this happen more when turning? If you using the word 'ping' to describe a sound that is not coming from the engine, call it a 'ting' instead. Ping has a hollow sound, ting has a metallic sound. Most common reasons for a 'ting' are needle bearings like those found in universal joints, and the noise actually gets amplified by the hollow drive shaft. On a 4wd, there are quite a few universal joints, and they need to be checked by actually pulling the driveshaft out and checking the joints for both wear and being seized. If they are seized, you will be hard pressed to diagnose it with the shaft in the truck. Something that is seized will not have any play, but will cause noises and vibration. Once the needle bearings have turned to red dust (more commonly called 'red death'), and the joint is showing looseness, you are on hard launch away from dropping driveshaft without removing bolts or jacking the truck up.

You will also want to take a look at the cv joints on front axles.

Just got a new drive shaft last month and new u joints. The tink or ping is after switching from reverse to drive and then happens when gas is applied. same going from drive to reverse. It is NOT however the normal gear switching noise... even the techs verify that.

Can you get a recording of the actual noise? The driveshaft ia a pretty good amplifier of any u-joint noise. If your driveshaft is a two piece shaft, have they verified the condition of the hanger bearing?
