Autel Al519 code scanner

Hi everybody! I'm from Manisnowba which is North of Minnisnowta and this is my first post. I hope to get some answers to some questions concerning my 2004 GM Sierra 1500 with 5.3 V8.

I am having some messages come up on my dash. The check engine light is on and stays on now. I have changed the oil but get a change oil soon message and finally the ABS light comes on once in a while. I have to deal with these and I am thinking of purchasing a Autel al519 code scanner which hopefully will help me to diagnose and fix the check engine light. Is this scanner compatible with the 2004 GM pickup or is there a protocol problem. I saw somewhere that it wouldn't work for a fellow that had a 2007 GM pickup and Autel support told him that there was a protocol problem with the unit and that they were working on a fix. That was a year ago. Now I wonder if Autel has done an upgrade to their program and if it is available. I did some searching and found that I have to buy the unit and register before I can download any upgrades.

I have to reset the oil life after I've changed the oil. The truck doesn't know unless you reset it.

As far as the scanner I'm not familiar with that brand. But any OBD2 scanner should work. I have an Innova scan tool that reads the code displays the cause of the code (ie Bank 1 Lean). Mine is a 3100 model. I also have a Scanguage 2, it reads the code but you have to google the code to find the reason it threw it.

I will check my manual on how to reset the oil life. I didn't see any typical reset buttons but maybe the manual will show something. I will post back on that.

That did it Chris. Thanks for that helpful hint. I think I may have a touch of 'Old Timers' because I changed the oil before on that truck and reset the oil life the way you described but I guess the mind is full of other stuff!!

It is in the manual. My oil only gets changed every 6 months. And I usually dont do it. Sometimes I will have to reset it though

Back again and tried out the scanner today. The protocol that my truck uses is SAE J1850 VPW for future reference.

I have 3 codes that come up. P0101 which appears to be a MAF (mass air flow) problem. A faulty maf sensor or an open or short in maf circuit. If you know where I can find this sensor please post.

The next two codes are P0171 and P0174 which appear to be System too lean or intake leak after MAF sensor or restriction in fuel system or bad spark plugs or faulty sensors in Bank 1 or 2. I haven't changed the spark plugs yet so I will start with that. Any helpful advice with these sensors would be great!

MAF sensor is right by the air box. You can find MAF cleaner at car parts places, if you're lucky you can clean it and fix the problem. Takes 10 minutes.

Clean the MAF, Check for intake leaks at the manifold where it bolts to the heads also check any connections

Though Autel is a good brand, but AL519 it is just a scan tool, like so many other al619, md802 etc, i cannot figure them out. I stick to Tech II. If you are lucky, a good clone will work as expected.
