NNBS lower engine splash guard

Is the lower engine splash guard required? When I took mine off today I noticed that the bolt holes were so cracked it was barely attached. I trashed it. I see they are pretty cheap, but I'm wondering if they are even required?

Is there a metal one available that won't crack? Seems like it'll do no good if breaks easy. Pretty sure our winter weather is what did mine in.

The older rigs didn't have this. I'm halfway wondering if it's from the morons that drive through standing water at highway speeds complaining about their belts squeaking.

I always assumed they put them on for aerodynamics and the 0.00001 mpg that could be gained by having the air flow more smoothly under the truck. It makes sense to me that if they were for "protection" they'd be made out of metal, but since they are plastic I again figured weight savings and mpg were the goal. I don't think it would hurt anything (other than the 00001 mpg you'd lose) not having it on.

Looks like the Pro Comp part is for a lifted suspension though?

I would prefer to break the splash guard then have something more important take the hit.

There's nothing to break there that the splash guard would protect.
