HP/TQ difference with E85?

So e85 on a 93 tune will be a little quicker than 93 on a 93 tune?

in theory yes....e85 is about 99 octane so the computer will adjust accordingly to it

On paper yes it should.

I would have your tuner adjust the tables for flex fuel the same way he did for 93. I gain 32hp from running E85 over 93 octane and im dyno tuned for both.

As a side note.... fueled today with E85. Price $2.45. E10 going for $3.39, regular gas going for $3.62, and premium hitting $3.84. I get premium performance at $1.40 a gallon cheaper and only about a 15% fuel economy loss. Now to do that Diablo premium tune I have been putting off.

Is there an add pack in e85 like there is with 87,91, or 93 octane? Would you ever see this having an effect on the engine? Sort of hijacking the thread but just curious what you all think.

The traditional add packs like Top Tier are not needed in E85. The fuel is clean burning and leaves no deposits like traditional gasoline. Engines using E85 stay surprisingly clean and in many cases exhibit less wear. GM in the owners manual says to NOT use any fuel system additives when using E85.

Here is a thread about wear on an engine that spent 3 years on E85 (complete with pics).....

And here is a video of an engine tear down on a 2000 Chevy Tahoe that did over 100,000 miles on E85, and it was converted to E85 and was not a flex fuel from the factory......

E85 has way more ethanol content than E10. 85% vs around 10%.

That vid is pure propaganda from a long time ago. I don't disagree with the fact that an engine on E85 makes more power. But in no way is it easier on fueling components than regular fuel. Not trying to take this too far off topic, but as far as engine health here is a pic of my 1990 5.7, ran on the cheapest no brand 87 money can buy for 193,000 miles. NO carbon build up and all in all very clean. The scoring is due to blown head gasket and consequent overheating.

So does E85 have less carbon buildup? Also does E85 create more carbon buildup in the intake components and injectors?

Posted

Yep, you can tell from the camaro forum thread and the video that E85 carbons up worse than 500ppm sulfur diesel.

Posted

Then what precautions should be taken when using e85 for extended periods of time for the intake and what not?

Posted

Im a bit confused. Some are saying e85 cleans the engine and reduces carbon and some are saying it increases carbon in the intake

Instead of typing a 5000 word essay on why most of the rumors in this thread are stupid i will just make this short and simple.

100% ethanol is 114-115 octane fuel where E85 is ROUGHLY 105 octane. Obviously it varies just like your 93 octane does at the pump. Higher octane burns for longer and cooler because of stoich levels. Running a higher octane at a lower stoich level will run richer and fuel will be harder to ignite allowing for little to no KR which of course allows you to bump timing.

Motors since 1985 have been built to run with larger amounts of both ethanol and water. So dont believe any crap about it destroying your fuel system/ o-rings/ hoses and whatever else you can think of. It just doesnt happen these days. You will see carbon build up on the intake side but nothing to cry about. Whoever said low sulfer diesel has build up should read around. A majority of build up is because of tuning/emissions and not from fuel. A duramax or powerstroke with no emissions equipment and a retune will run forever and be clean as hell. Ive seen it first hand.

EGR, DPF, PCV, DEF, all that crap will kill an engine before fuel does.
