HP/TQ difference with E85?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about trying E85 in the 2002 L59. Has anyone noticed any hp or tq difference with the E85? I know the mpg would be worse

I do notice a slight change, nothing to get to excited about. I am however tuned to run E-85. The only way to know for sure is to try. Is the L59 capable of running E-85, I am not sure.

I am trying all of this stuff right now too. My mileage was about the same between the stock tune and the performance. I didnt have any spark knock or anything of that nature. But I did notice the truck will sure get moving faster. I like running e85 and it is still cheaper by the mile to run than 87, at least in my pickup. Its about 25 cents per mile on 87 and 19 cents per mile on e85.

You do loose some of the advantages of the add pack with regular gas though too. I am also not sure how the fuel mixture, if you cannot find e85, would affect the tune. I have read if you have a flex fuel vehicle and use a performance tune, you are all set. But......I have no idea the long term effects. Right now I am trying to run the data logging features to compare timing advance and o2 sensor readings between stock and performance tune. So far I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary.

I have an 06 silverado with 5.3 ffv. Vin Z

Thanks for the info! Please let us know how that goes. I think i'll try e85 with the 93 tune

How do you define long term?

I have run almost 36K miles of E85 in my 2010.

I was meaning the effects of running e85 on a tune for 93 octane. I don't know what that would do with a change in timing, for the plugs or other components, over years of use. On a stock tune I would guess there would be no long term effects because the truck was designed to work that way.

You have 36k on it and would have a much better idea than I would. I'm only around 1000 on e85 but I guess I would define long term as anything over 100,000. I expect to get we over 200,000 on my pickup and don't know if e85 is a great, okay, or poor, choice for doing that.

Have you noticed anything different while running e85?

None

Truck has a bb tune justin did it in person. Nothing special for e85. I can run either e85 or 93. Haven't run 93 in over 2 yrs.

Just to clarify, you are tuned for 93 and run e85? If that's the case you made me feel a lot better about running it this way then.

I also checked the timing advance on my way home for anyone who is curious about it. Running 55mpg on a flat road in 38 degree weather it was at 27 degrees. Stock tune had it closer to 23 degrees on he he same stretch of road.

Yes BB doesn't have a specific tune for E85

My truck is by no mean a speed demon but with some winter weight in the back I did some 0-60 times and tracked it on my programmer. These were on the same night, from the same stop sign, at the same engine and tranny temps, pretty much as controlled as I could make it minus the gas from the previous run.

E85 on Stock tune = 9.24

E85 on SC Performance tune = 8.44

Difference of 0.8 seconds just by changing the tune and no pinging or other things that I could have noticed.

Not sure if you guys are aware but inside your tune you have 3 tables relating to spark while running e85. It will pull spark from your high octane fuel table based on the percentage of ethanol in your fuel. For all you guys running a 93 tune and e85 you are more than safe.

You will see even more benefits if you get an actual tune for e85 though!

I have my low octane table tuned for 91-93 and my high octane table is specifically tuned for e85.
