Truck wouldn't start

So today I got into my truck and drove to my office (about 50 miles away) everything was fine and nothing out of the ordinary. Well after all my boring meetings in the morning I went to leave and truck wouldn't start. The key turned forward and all everything came one: stereo, nav, heater, etc. I called onstar and they did a check and everything was reading fine. They sent a mobile mechanic (if thats what you want to call him) to check it out and of course all he could say was "well I don't understand it, you need to tow it to the dealer" I called onstar back and let them know to send a tow truck. Well a couple hours have passed and almost everybody in my office came out to see what was going on, well right before the tow truck got there, one last employee came out and sure enough the damn thing started. I shut it down about 10 times before driving and it started right back up. Has anybody had this problem? I did search and everything I found was about some exhaust flapper freezing shut, living in California where it was 70 today I don't think that thing froze. I'm kinda confused now because shes running perfect and I don't have much time to take it to the dealer but also don't want to get stranded somewhere. Any advice would help, Thank you in advance

I know a few other members had some of the same issues and had to get a new starter. Just take it to the dealer and have them check it out.

I was afraid that might be the only option, I wonder how long they take to get? The loaner vehicle the Chevy dealer said I could get is a mid-sized car and being in Construction that doesn't help me at all.

check your negative battery terminal and make sure its not loose. had this same problem in my last truck it wouldn't start then all the sudden it cranked and i shut it off and restarted it 10 times as well then 2 days later same thing finally traced it to loose terminal

Once in a while I'll turn the key and there will be a half a second delay before it starts but never any no start issues so far

once and a while there would be a half second delay on mine as well but yesterday was just BS. So far though it has started and run like it should so I guess I just make an appointment with the dealer and see what they say. There is nothing like driving a 40k+ truck and worrying about it not starting though. I hope they take care of this when it goes in

I have had the half sec delay on some of my other cars too. I think it's just the computer

The starter problems that were reported were mostly cold climate related. Something about moisture entering the starter due to a faulty seal and causing it to freeze up.

Well I am going to take it into the dealer and have them look at everything. I traded my 05 Duramax in for this truck because of electrical problems and I really don't need to go through that crap again.

What electrical problems did you have with the Duramax? I came close to buying one of those back in '06.

Where to begin LOL, it was in the shop for 3 months because they couldn't find it. They finally said it was the crank shaft sensor throwing everything off because the crankshaft was actually bent or something. Well after they fixed that same problems came back, loss of instrument panel, radio would turn on and off, doors would chime, I would lose all power to the cab (windows, locks, etc.) the truck would still run but it was shady as hell. So after it started doing that again I took it back to the shop after dropping $3500 on the first fix for them to tell me $7000 for the BCM, ECU and faulty wires they supposedly had to re-run throughout the truck. I was in no position to test it so I just traded it in, I loved that damn truck though. It had 5in. exhaust, EFI Live, lift pump, and I was saving for trans and twins until that happened. It didn't help the day it broke down I was in the process of moving from Colorado to California for work so I had to make a quick choice. I'm over the diesel now and love my 2014

This has been a fairly common problem with this new platform. You only paid $40-$50k for it though, so surely you don't expect it to start every time... (Insert cynical grin here _____)

The main issues have been in cold climates but there are also a lot of complaints about excessive cranking times. I live I'm Texas and one morning mine had to turn over 6-8 times before it would start in 34* weather.

I think this problem is likely going to become more known and I would hope GM is working on a resolution, one of which would be to recall them all for a starter swap.

The exhaust silencer/flapper is another known cause due to it freezing shut and not letting the exhaust to flow. There's already a "fix" developed for that which has also been shown to fail.

GM did a horrible job of real world testing on these trucks as they have proven to be deeply flawed in many areas.

    • Without knowing how bad your banging is, one suggestion is the intermediate steering shaft on the steering wheel. These used to be a problem on 800 and earlier series. The feeling/sound was sometimes described as "clunking" and was felt in the wheel. Also there is a plastic piece in the lower column that is referred to as a bearing. Not your traditional looking bearing though. Your ball joints, bushings and tie rods or steering rack (if equipped) are the main point of issues. You never mention total unit miles, only that you've put 60k on it.   You can search the site for help on the ISS description. Plenty of these have been replaced   https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=site%3Agm-trucks.com+intermediate+steering+shaft&ia=web
    • Yes I have is set with the 1mm disk (Minumim Tension), for spring spacing and I raised my truck in the rear 1.5". You can go 2mm  and I think 3mm if you need.Minimum. We are on our way to TN from GA.. My wife is driving and stated she cannot believe  and   stated she can not belive the difference.
    • Most 1 ton trucks come with the factory overload spring, which need to be removed for installation of RoadActive Suspension. Removing the overload allows proper fitment and ensures the system works as intended. The RAS® Mega-Duty kit will reduce squat and provide significant improvement vs the factory overload spring.
    • I wonder as well, why they would send me a text message with links to these suggested procedures totalling over $10,000 without even the slightest hint of how they arrived at these being necessary.
    • https://precisionlubrication.com/articles/oil-filter-efficiency/     For them it is a problem of $$$$ and compliance. To cover both they have to lie from the heart.    Government wants low waste oil numbers so the bar needs to be very low on contamination to met that requirement.  Consumer wants cheap maintenance (perceived cost). Again requiring a low bar.  OEM wants high margins at a cost effective warranty rate and lots of repeat customers. More low bar.  Filter manufacture wants the same thing the OEM wants. See the pattern?   Consumers are fickle and also want perfection requiring a HIGH bar. Inconsistent with all of the above. Consumers can be, when the put their minds to it, inquisitive, love winning arguments which requires some useful information to be available to support them. And this is where it gets sticky and the lies begin.    Information needs a solid well grounded point of reference if we are to compare in a useful way. There is a standard for this.  ISO 4548-12. This standard sets the particle size at a specific Beta ratio and darn few are faithful to its intent.    If they don't state the test method they change the particle size or the Beta ratio to hit a perceived favorable standard. They obscure the information in a way as to prevent direct comparisons leaving the consumer with one method. UOA's with an ISO 4406 test result. Pricey and not allot of labs willing to do the work. Lobby work happens everywhere, not just at the seat of government.
