Can I take the leaf springs out of a 2500 and replace my 1500 leafs with them?

Yes if the years are the same you should be ok. Measure the spring lenghts. I did this to a 2000 year.

Are they different? What do you gain using the larger ones.

More load capacity, better loaded handling.

This. With the new leaf packs, I can barely tell my horse trailer is behind me.

I have a 2006 1/2 ton that I carry a lance truck camper with. I added a Rancho add a leaf and it carries it with no issues...

The nice thing about the 2500HD rear springs is, you get 2 extra main leafs and a heftier overload. It adds 1.5" to rear height too. I pulled my 1.25" block and all worked out

The semifloater axle is still the weak link. Make sure you don't exceed the 4000-lb GAWR. My 01 Burb is on its third rear axle. The first two died ugly, premature deaths due to overloading, both times while on vacation with the family. Try to explain to your family why they have to spend 4 days in Mitchell, SD waiting for a new axle to be shipped from Minneapolis, instead of frolicking in Colorado or Yellowstone.
