Steering Wheel Whine

I've noticed while turning the wheel that a slight mechanical whine is heard.  It seems worse when cold.  Truck has 17K miles on it.  Any TSB's on this? ???

Back in the high school days I had a 1988 Olds Delta 88 and it had a loud steering whine.  To fix it I used some DOT 3 Slick 50 stuff.  It work within 5 min.  It was great!  I hate Slick 50 but their power steering stuff worked great.

The tighter the turn, the louder the noise usually too.  At least that's been my experience on most vehicles.  The neighbor across the street has an older F-150 that makes some great noises in the morning backing out of the drive between the manual tranny and the steering.

The sound is coming from the steering column, not the engine compartment.  Not the same sound as power steering pump whine as I know it, like when you cut the wheel hard left or right.  I can move the wheel 1/4 turn either direction and still hear it.

My 2001 GMC had a TSB for "Steering Gear Whistle"

look it up at alldata.  They replaced a bushing uner warranty at first..no haps...then they replaced the rack under warranty.  The rack did it.  Sameo sameo for my buddy who had a 2000 GMC same problem same repairs same result.
