I was wondering about shop prices

Water pump?  

for me 27 bucks new, 2 1gallon containers of autozone antifreeze ( 50/50 mixture) oh and while I was at it, new hoses all around, another 25.  So maybe 60 bucks and 3 or so hours in all.

 

How much would that be at a shop? 300?  

Very curious as to how much money I saved myself.  :cool: I must say, chevy trucks have got to be #### near the easiest vehicle to work on ever.  Well, 80's buicks are pretty easy to get to things too.  I dread the day I have to touch the 98 venture though....it just looks like it would love to eat my knuckles.

I had the water pump replaced on my '99 F-250 diesel a few months ago.  $660 and two days (well most of that time was spent trying to find the leak).   :cool:   Luckily I had about 5k miles left on the 100k warranty so I didn't have to pay for it.   :crazy:

I just had it done at Midas last Saturday on my '98 'Burb.  

 

The total was $360. $30 worth of flush-n-fill, a new $130 water pump, $30 in supplies and $170 labor.  

 

If I had the time (a.k.a. kids and wife went away for the day) and it wasn't so freakin' cold out I might have tried it myself in my garage.  Alas, I've turned into that "Usta could" kind of guy until the kids grow up and move out.

when I flushed my last, it had a bit of Dex mixed in(I didn't knwo when I did it, luckly it was just a little Dex)

 

and I spent probably 20 mins with the truck idling and flushing before it was good enough to stop.

 

I guess a little Dex goes a long way :rolleyes:

The warranty paid 577.09 back on 2-1-01 for a new water pump , valve cover gaskets, intake gasket set , plenium gasket, labor and coolant flush .

I paid 50.00 for the deductible so 627.09 all together .

Labor on the water pump was 88.20 and labor on the intake,valve cover gaskets were 214.20

Intersting was the <5.7L> Vin 'R' engine originally running Dexcool? We have only seen WP failures on engines originally equpped with Dexcool if green coolant was added.

It definitely has the 5.7 motor.  I just bought the truck in September and it had Dex at the time.  I'm hoping no green was in there before but I can't be sure.  At least they said the intake manifold wasn't leaking.  It looks like a whole lot of stuff to take off to get at that!

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
