They know how to handle a recall. You know, before people die, and even though there might not be an issue.

Ok, they blew that, bu That happened because of a wreck. It wasn't due to driving down the road and the vehicle failing. It passed government safety tests for it or it wouldn't have been sold. This new dodge recall is because of a potential vehicle failure for normal operation. Not apples to apples comparison you are giving.

 

People in the GM recall died because they are driving down the road and the steering wheel locked.

 

Hit any car hard enough and the gas tank could rupture. Oh, and pulling an article from an ambulance chaser....I'm sure there is no hyperbole in that.

I had an 2005 dodge ram reg cab 2wd with hemi before the mds with factory 20's and that thing was a beast never had any problems with it and it had over 50,000 on it when I got rid of it. I kinda miss that truck, I thought about a new one because of the rear gears but I still like my Z71. Why can't you take the best of all of them and make one badass truck.

My Dodge had the infamous ball joint issue/recall.

 

Pulled into the driveway one day, just a few days prior to the official issuance of the recall, front passenger's wheel fell off along with the spindle.

 

Wheel. Fell. Off.

 

Heard a *pop*, then a somewhat disconcerting falling/grinding/crashing noise (that was the front end crashing into the driveway btw).

 

I called the dealership in the morning. Asked them for a ride. They resisted, then I asked for a rollback. They asked if a tow would suffice. Meh...maybe, your call.

 

I would have dismissed this as freakishly bad luck, which I AM known for, but the SAME EXACT THING happened to a co-worked the next freakin week AFTER I had warned him!

We specialize in Cummins and of course with that dodge trucks at my shop. The second and third gen trucks are notorious for the front ball joints going bad. Id say we do at least 1 truck for ball joints a week, and wheel bearings at least 1 a week. There not terrible trucks but there sure as hell not perfect.

 

The 4th gens seem like they are a bit better built and the 6.7 is a much better engine, but then again the 4th gens haven't been out that long.

Not trying to flame or anything, but this is kinda my point. "A bit better built".

 

2001, Dakota QC. Sold at 220k, just shy of 14 years. Issues:

 

• EVERY fluid leaked. With the possible exception of gas, though I always questioned that with the 10~12 mpg average. Yes, even windshield washer fluid.
• Replaced driver's window regulator 7 times. All others at least once.
• None of the electric door locks worked since ~40k
• Fog lights never worked. Well that's not fair. They worked for a week.
• Replaced 5 front wheel hubs/bearings.
• Speed sensor bad.
• Oil pressure sending unit bad.
• MAP sensor bad.
• TPS sensor bad, twice.
• Tilt steering lever broke.
• Wires kept falling off of speakers. Repeatedly.
• None of the window switches worked except the driver's. No, I didn't have the kid locks on.
• Speaking of, one of the kid locks didn't work.
• Power steering pump went out twice, and leaked continuously in between changes.
• Fuel pump check valve, bad.
• CD player, bad.
• Had to replace anything that was "maintenance free" in the front end about every 75K miles. About 6k total invested up there.
• Fan resistor pack went out 3 times.
• Cruise control didn't work.
• Some of the gauges didn't work.
• Passenger's power mirror didn't work.
• Rear brakes never seemed to work. Seriously. 220k, never had any pad wear.
• Not really a failure per se, but the oem front brake setup had to be the worst in known history. Wouldn't stop a Fiat.

Oddly, with the exception of the fog lights I never replaced a single bulb. Very odd. Not sure what magical bulbs they used, but hey I'll take it!

 

By contrast...

 

My wife's 2005 Bonneville GXP (Yes! A Pontiac!). Around 200K. Issues:

 

• Small rear cam cover oil leak.
• Right rear air line going to the shock rubbed against the body because it fell out of the clip and wore through.

That...that's about it. She's even wrecked it twice. So back to the Dodge build quality, not sure "a bit better" is gonna cut it for me

Oh don't mistake me for a dodge fan, i'm just saying at least they are headed in the right direction. Dakotas were terrible terrible trucks but that was kinda universal for domestic midsize trucks in the 2000's

No problems when I got rid of it just trying to cut some costs at the time kinda trim the fat so to speak
