Signal lights stop flashing when brakes applied

Hi all,

 

1996 C1500.

 

Have a problem where when I hit the brakes and I'm signalling, it will stop blinking and the turn signal light I've selected just stays on.

But only 138,000 km - practically a spring chicken

Question to throw out to the community at large: could it be a broken wire? That was a suggestion of my mechanic over the phone.

Turns out the trailer plug was shorting out against the hitch.
