May have ruined my transmission

A couple if months ago I bought my 05 sierra and within the first week on a long drive I suddenly lost all power to the wheels. Put it in neutral and coasted to a stop. Once the smoke cleared I realized someone had patched in some rubber on the trans cooler line and neglected to tighten it. Put er back together and put some fluid in and off I went. Since then trans has a hard shift 1-2 and slips 2-3. This weekend my wife was taken to hospital via ambulance and I was a few hours away. Needless to say the truck was driven very hard. 20 kms from the hospital I lose power again, smoke everywhere. Other end of said repair had let go. Called a friend who brought fluid, on my way again. On the two hours home my trans was gutless up hills shifting very strange and didn't seem to get lockup. Would you guys think I've screwed the trans? I'm going to drop the pan today and put a new filter and fluid. Hoping I can save this thing. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks and sorry for being so long winded.

If you ran dry twice, my bet is its toast. Not going to hurt anything by changing fluid and filter.

Once you run a 4L60 dry they have to be rebuilt. That was my experience with one in my 95 Camaro.

Thanks for the replies. I did filter and fluid and added some Lucas. Tried driving it and lost third and forth gears. It's buggered. Not sure if I should attempt a rebuild or swap a used one in. I'd rather swap. Will any 99-05 4x4 work? Or am I limited at all? Thanks again

As much as that^ is hilarious, I know it's pooched. I'm going to pick up a tranny from a 99 burban, from anything I read it should work fine. If anyone can confirm or deny that for me would be great before I spend the money. Thanks

Physically yes she is fine. We lost a baby yesterday unfortunately. 15 weeks pregnant everything going well, all of a sudden she is in er. Pretty devastating but we are coping. Thanks for your concern.

A 99 suburban is a gmt400 not sure the compatability with the gmt800 platform.

As much as I would love a new tranny it is definitely not an option. Single income family, every dollar counts. I bought a 99 burb trans last night with a very recent rebuild for 180$ I'm going to have to take my chances.
