I have a brand new block lm7 vortec 5.3 gen III. My question is do have to hone a brand new block that has never been assembled.

Still not answering the question. I am building the engine myself. I currently have the crank, rods and pistons at a machine shop to balance them. I just need to know if a brand new engine that has never been assembled needs to be honed or not.

You seem to be confused. Did you purchase a brand new unassembled engine? Or did you purchase a brand new block, then ordered in pistons, then rods, then a crank, then all the assembly bits and pieces? Those are two completely different animals.

 

Since you called it a brand new engine, to me that means the entire package is brand new. Or is this a new block only, and the rest is rebuilt? The people to ask regarding the assembly of the engine is the machine shop that would be doing the work to size the block to match the pistons you got. Are these new pistons? Are they standard size? My point in asking all those questions is that asking a question like yours in a public forum is about the worst idea you have had. No one can say if the block needs honing based on the information you provided. Why you are not asking the machine shop that is doing the balancing raises some red flags for me.

 

What would you do if someone said that no, you don't need to touch the block, just assemble it, and you did? On first start up you find that piston clearance was a bit tight, now the engine block and pistons are one piece. There are some things you just do not trust an anonymous forum for. The scary part is that someone has to tell you that.

The scary part is the way your thinking, worst idea. Really I'm asking in a public forum because no one else has. And it's a brand new block only, purchased separate pistons. The crank, pistons, rods and flywheel are currently at the machine shop to get balanced. I'm looking for advice not sarcasm.

Look at the cylinders and see if they have been honed. If not then hone them. If you don't know what to look for then you shouldn't be the one to hone them. Or have someone who knows how to help you out. Don't create more problems than you need.

I'd let the machine shop check it over. Mic the cylinder walls to make sure they are uniform. I've seen some blocks that have been machined with wide ranging oversize dimensions

You got the advice in the first reply, but you didn't want advice, you want a yes/no answer to your question.

 

If you have any knowledge in the area of engine building you would know that you need to machine/finish the block to match new pistons. That alone tells you what you need to do. But, it does not answer your question.

i think you are bonkers to try this after asking here as doug said,,,,,,i tried to tell you that a machine shop is the place to have this entire process done for you but you have some gigantic ego that you think you can do this ,,,,like i said good luck,,,you're gonna need it pal

YES, by the shop that has your pistons and rings so that the parts will match.
