New to forum. 8.1 big block help/opinions

Hello all as I'm new to the forum. Look forward to gettin to know y'all

 

A fella very close to my family has a 02 single

Cab with 42,000 miles with the Allison 5 and 8.1 motor. I farm for a living and have a 06 ext cab Chevy 6.0 currently. The fella is wanting me to buy it this fall when I sell some of my calves. It is a standard work truck has probably only pulled 2-3k miles or of the 42 that it has.

 

He is a older fella (kinda a grandfather figure to me sincere has past several years ago). He has just poked around in the truck rarely driving it. I've had phenomenal luck with my current Chevy as my dad has 1 too and it also is awesome. We have been a Chevy family but haven't been around the 8.1. I do understand all the specs and such and yea it's a thirsty ol girl. With that said I want to know about problems or if there really is any with these motors. The 6.0 is bulletproof IMO so if you all would please chime in I'd really appreciate it

Yes sir 4.10 rear end. He said he checked milage 2 weeks ago and got 13. Seems about right I figure. Has brand new tires as I mounted them for him also extra set of rims with tires.

I would pick that truck up.. Low miles and a pretty rare truck. No brainer to me

I felt it was a no brainer myself but I've not been around the 8.1. A friend of mine had a 03' 8.1 and it leaked oil from the day he took it off the lot they never could get it fixed so he just traded it

I've watched some YouTube vids an googled alot up on them. Seems people put a turbo on them and dog the crap out of em?

The only limit is the depth of your pockets... lol mine use about 1 qt of oil every 5000 miles, but im kind of hard on it. Fire calls and usually pulling trailer. Otherwise i take my sonoma.

For the most part they are prett solid motors.. There are no known major flaws.. Some 8.1s have been known to consume a bit of oil... Wouldn't be afraid of one though

I don't need the fanciness. Ranch hand replacement bumper, ruff tires to get me through fields, ball and brake box for gooseneck.

 

But seeing that turbo and such on YouTube seemed like it opened them trucks up alot. I dont care to race if I did I'd buy a vet but If i want to take 20,000lb somewhere I got the truck to do so. Any input on turbo work and such?

Another thing I like about this truck is its 16" rims. I find 17"+ rims pointless and waste. But some do it for looks. Me haha well when the Holstein bull walks up and sees his glare in the side of ya truck and hits it real good u learn to forget about the looks

Thats too good to pass up. If you want a smidgin better fuel econo with a 8.1 a bb tune might help. I did gain with my 02 5.3 on the highway by 1-2 with the tune and k&n

Bb tune? I'd like to hear about the turbo setups too? The sts is about 6k and I'm not doing that. Figure it can be done cheaper just gotta know where to look

Yeah i blackbear tune will help you out quite a bit with that 8.1. And a turbo will do wonders
