New to forum. 8.1 big block help/opinions

The only problems that I know of are the crank position sensor. When they go in the 8.1 the motor basically just stalls.

I searched and came up empty on this. Could someone point me to a thread on it.

I had the same stalling issues and had to replace the crank sensor. Its not too bad to replace. Its just a tight fit to reach in there. I had this problem with about 40K miles and I now have 72K miles on my 2002 8.1L This is the only major issue I've had with the motor. Like others have said, she does drink some oil. The only other problem I've had is rusting of the rocker panels but I live in Mn so the salted roads don't help with that.

 

All in all this is a great truck!

Thanks so much bud. I picked up this suburban a few months back from my brother, who owned it since new and took great care of it.

 

 

With 226K on the clock and it riding on 35s with 456 gears she drinks a little gas, and oil, but she runs like a top.

I think you are right. I'm a Mopar guy (don't beat me up. Lol) so I'm not as familiar with the visual differences, but I'm 99% sure it doesn't have the 4L80E. No filter on the outside of the trans (that's what I was told to look for).

The 60 was standard with the 6.0. If you got the 8.1 then it came with the 80. The LQ4 doesnt make enough power to warrant an 80 in a suburban. The tow rating was also probably not significant enough to warrant the 80

Wow i cant believe that. I woulda totally thought the 2500 burb had the 80! I think its wrong that gm did that. 3/4 ton axles and engine but not trans

I'm not sure that is correct. I had a 2001 3/4 ton with the 6.0l motor and I had a 4l80 trans, all of the 8.1l had the 4l85e. The reason for the 3/4tons never getting the DMax/Ally combo was due to size(too big). All in all I have never seen a GMT800 Burban with a 4L60 trans.

I look at it with the ATRA and the info you had was a misprint. The 60 only came in 1500's

Then we can find out what trans is under this truck.
