Random won't start problem

I have a 2000 GMC 3500 that usually runs great and is a pleasure to drive. Sometimes when I hit the key it will start right away. Equally as often it will turn over for a seconds than start and run fine. 3 or 4 times now it has started and eminently died repeatedly to the point I had to either take another vehicle. One time I had no choice, I just kept starting it and prayed for about 10 min. until it started and ran. The first time it happened I thought it may have been the fuel filter so I changed it. I blew through the old one, and it blew easy so I knew that was not the problem. When it does this, I can hear the pump kick on when I turn the key on so I know it is pumping. Someone said it may be the pump relay. I havent had a chance to check that yet, just wanted to see what you guys thought.

I'm gonna ask the obvious here. Did you test the battery and check the battery cables?

Never considered that, doesn't seem to be a battery issue. Never has a problem turning over or even starting, just staying running. When it does this it will start and run for one to one and a half seconds and stops. I'll check it, just never considered it as a culprit for the problem. I have seen stranger things happen.

It's just I had a similar problem with my 2000 dying right after starting and dying going down the road and it turned out to be of all things a negative battery cable just barely loose
