fpe5 Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Is it normal for a new 2014 sierra to have a ticking sound?
8.1HD/ALLISON Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 Yes. Direct injection system makes more noise than older trucks. Sent from my LGL86C using Tapatalk
Tattooo Posted July 21, 2014 Posted July 21, 2014 I dont notice a ticking sound on my 14 sierra at .....
SolomonAKOO Posted July 23, 2014 Posted July 23, 2014 A lot of that ticking sound can go away if you put 1/4-1/2 quart less of oil. It won't ruin anything either, I did it for years when I had my 2011 Camaro SS.

SolomonAKOO Posted July 24, 2014 Posted July 24, 2014 Huh? How does that affect anything? Im lost. Sent from my LGL86C using Tapatalk I dont get it either ? Well if the tick that your talking about is the tick of the lifters then, the theory behind it is there is so much oil in the pan that the crank paddles the oil just enough to airate the oil and the air accumulates in the lifters and makes them tick. so i tried putting about a 1/2 qt. less of oil and the tick went away, not completely but it really quieted it down alot. Believe it or not its fine, but what the harm of putting a 1/2 qt. less of oil to see if it helps out your ticking as well, if it doesn't you can always add that extra oil back into your engine.
8.1HD/ALLISON Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 Makes sence, but if its in the operating range on dipstick it should not be that high to interfere with crank. Sent from my LGL86C using Tapatalk
SolomonAKOO Posted July 25, 2014 Posted July 25, 2014 You would think. Sorry I'm not a scientist so I can't give you much more info than that lol all I know is it works, why exactly I'm not sure.
newdude Posted July 29, 2014 Posted July 29, 2014 Is it normal for a new 2014 sierra to have a ticking sound? Yes the direct injection system produces a good bit of noise. Consists of the injectors them self (high pressure) and the high pressure fuel pump. The high pressure fuel system does have unique operating characteristics, in particular the noise emanating from the high pressure fuel pump can result in a subtle ticking noise that is apparent when the vehicle is idling. The sound is more evident when outside around the vehicle, when the hood is open or the vehicle is operated in a drive-through. The sound may be more noticeable during a cold start, but lessens once the engine is warm. A slightly higher pitched clicking sound is the fuel injectors pulsing ON and OFF under the high fuel pressures. These sounds are a normal characteristics of the DI high pressure fuel system.
Fisherman68 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 No the ticking noise is not normal unless it the regular diesel clatter mine had that noise so I listened to other 2011 duramaxes and talked to other owners. Theirs did not make that noise so after two different Dealerships one found a service bulletin describing the noise coming from the oil pump affecting 2010 and early 2011. They replaced the pump noise gone and I'm very happy no more ticking noise.

Fisherman68 Posted September 5, 2014 Posted September 5, 2014 Thats what various dealerships tried to tell me but they were wrong I found one that said it was not normal and fixed it thank you very much.
