Question on 2wd front shock replacement

I'm about to replace the shocks on my 2000 2wd Silverado but I've been reading different sides of how to do the fronts.

 

Do I need to deal with the springs? From what I've gathered all that's needed is to loosen the shock and it'll slide down and out? Without needing to compress the springs.

 

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

No spring problems on your truck. Loosen the shock and drop out the bottom

Yup, unless you have a spacer lift kit, then the fun begins!

Damn getting the top but is difficult! There are wires and stuff around it, and only a wrench will fit. I wish I had some deep sockets for this.
