Mossyoakglock Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 There was another post where somebody was taking their truck in for new rings and pistons due to oil consumption and they were told that the dealer can now disable AFM. Has anybody else heard of this or can confirm or deny? He said that they didn't elaborate but just said they can turn it off. If that's the case I might have to have them do that. I honestly don't really care what it costs as long as it's off but I don't see it being that much. If it is true hopefully GM has owned up and admitted that the AFM is one of the leading causes of oil consumption. Personally their should be a recall regarding atleast the valve cover and deflector, maybe even pistons and rings.

I will be very surprised if there's any truth to it. Edit: I'm pretty sure they can do it but I doubt they will allow dealerships to turn it off for average joes like us.
pezboy Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 They can do it. It is just switching a setting on the ECM from Yes to No. If they will do it, I have no idea.
johnhankel Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I was the one who started the conversation about this.. I have an appointment for next Wednesday to take my truck in for rings and pistons. I am just relaying what the tech told me who is going to be working on my truck. I will tell him to turn it off. I will know more obviously when I get the truck back.
MMC Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 I do not think they will turn it off for you. I believe the calibrations they use are just stock downloads off the TIS2 website. https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web You can use a range device and remove if you want or a handheld tuner and do it yourself but that will void the powertrain warranty.
Mossyoakglock Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 I had the Range and went through 2 replacements (3 total devices) so I've stopped using it. I actually have the 3rd one still that has never been installed. I'm thinking of tuning it out since I'm already out of warranty but if GM can turn it off I'd rather have them do it.

What was wrong with the Range modules? I've had mine for over a year without any problems. It works just fine, other than the blue light is annoying, haha.
Mossyoakglock Posted October 3, 2014 Author Posted October 3, 2014 The first one caused a Communication error and I got the service stabilitrack light. Dealer had to check and clear those codes since the code reader I had didn't register them. They were just history codes. With the second one, the truck would randomly go into V4 mode. It did it a handful of times, including while driving down a flat stretch of road. I know for sure because I had it on the Instant Fuel Economy screen on the DIC. I haven't even attempted to use the 3rd one. It's still in the original box and never connected. Anybody heard anything else on GM possibly being able to turn off AFM?

That's interesting. Bummer that you had all of those issues. Hopefully, you'll be able to come up with a better solution.
