The body shop i work at gets 30% off all parts and pays no tax on things we buy from the dealer. Could i go to the parts counter and tell them where i work and about our 30% off and pay cash for a part?

Ask you boss at work before you start something like that, you don't want to put your job in jeopardy.

That discount is for your body shop , not you , they raise the price to make some extra cash ,

The dealer will say no

When ever I was in that position I would get the parts department where I worked to order the parts, and have them sent COD to my shop. Every place I worked were fine with it, provided I did not buy parts for side jobs and I paid the sales taxes. Usually I was the one ordering parts for my jobs, so dealing with parts houses for side jobs were delivered to my house, billed to me, with a cash account setup for me. Shops I worked at (not dealers) always left parts ordering to the mechanic, so parts suppliers were happy to keep me happy.

Always check with your employer first, and do not just listen to a co-worker regarding this.

That isn't a GM discount- it's a discount the dealer gives your shop. When I was at the dealership the Chevy shop gave me the discount when I needed parts for my truck but everywhere is different. In NH there is no tax to worry about so I can't comment on that.

Rob is right you cant get the discount, think of it this way anybody could walk in the dealer and say they work at your shop and get the discount? I don't think so, like said the discount is for the business you work at not you.

Now if you could order the parts through your work and pay your employer the price of the parts and the owner said its ok then sure.

Its not quite as black and white as that. I think if the OP walked into the parts place, said he worked where he does, and got just a regular counter worker, he would likely get the discounted price, and the tax would be added in. The only time they would balk is if he tried to charge the bill to his employers account, and even then if this is a small town, it likely would be charged to that account. Small town meaning under 2500 population. That being said, I still stand by my original opinion that he ask his employer first.

Generally auto dealers will offer "dealer" or "reseller" discounts to auto repair and body shops. They do not have to, but, it is their best interest to do this. Auto parts stores will generally offer a deeper discount on parts, but keep in mind that most parts are not OEM. The only exception are the parts stores that are AC Delco dealers as well. Locally I can get a better price on an AC Delco part from a parts store than I can from the dealer. Same part number between the two locations. The parts store I deal with gets same costing from GM as the dealer does on AC Delco parts. This is in Canada, USA may be different. I am still getting the deeply discounted pricing from local parts store, and have not worked in the industry since early 91. I would imagine that will start to change now that the guys I deal with are getting like me, old.
