The dealer will fix it for free.   Catalytic converters have a 10 year or 80,000 miles warranty or something like that

I realize that the dealer will replace if for free, but would there be any advantage with going to a aftermarket cat?  And just taking the opertunity to upgrade?  :werd:  I know but...........

These days, the cats aren't really the restriction as they once was.  On the 02 there are duals anyways.  If you are out of GM emission warranty (applies to any owner not just first, 2002 is 8 years or 80K miles) look at Random Technology for HiPo replacement cats.

they aren't terrible, but they do provide back pressure.  if you remove your cats, and lose your back pressure, you will lose your bottom end torque and gain high end HP.  IMO, if you don't have to meet emission laws, get high flowing cats, but make sure they have enough pressure. (a competent exhaust shop should be able to assist)

Definitely have it checked out by the dealer.  If the cats are shot on your '02, there is definitely something else wrong and they would just burn out again pretty soon.
