I'm looking at a 2014 Suburban, without the towing package. What exactly are the differences besides the integrated brake controller & the gear ratio & trans cooler?

I do tow a 6000lb race car a few times a year, & I think I can get buy without the towing package.

Well there would also be the receiver up under the rear end. Also the wiring for lights & brakes. I'd say if you're going to be towing you kind of need the towing package.

You have to really look at the fine details that are not always easy to spot. For example on the Traverse with the tow package you also get a bigger radiator, different tuning on the computer, and the trailer hitch that is integrated into the frame/ chassis. For the 1500 suburbans you might also be getting the bigger rear Diff(semi floating 9.5), but not 100% sure.

Does the better gear ratio have a bigger pumpkin? or just a different gear set ? And is the front gear ratio different to match the rear ?

It depends on what gears are available. In my generation of truck the 10-bolt held several different ratios but the pumpkin size didn't change. However, there are different size pumpkins for the different strengths of the rear end. If the vehicle in question is 4wd then yes, the ratio in the front will match the ratio in the back otherwise it would bind up the drivetrain.
