Yes the black box can be removed from the rack and then you could carry anything you want. I just needed more "trunk space" for my travels. If you check out the web site they have pictures of different things.

I was going kayaking, not to war.

If I was just going Kayaking for a few hrs putting them in the bed is easy but I'm guessing you have never been camping? Where would YOU put all your gear with the Kayaks taking up the entire bed?

In the back seat and around the yaks. Then again I am just a truck guy, not a family man, so I don't have a lot of gear to lug around

Those mounts are pretty trick, I hadn't found those.

I ended up going with the Yakima Bedrock mounts since I already had Yakima bars from a previous vehicle that would work. Decided I didn't need the bars and a cover at the same time and bedrocks are easy to pop out. might have to switch it up now but they are solid.

That's pretty nifty. You think they'll fit on the wide rails? The wide rails cover the plastic completely.

I am not sure how wide your rails are but I think that they will fit. (Of course this is just a guess) but there is a lot of room on mine, I will get a picture with tape measure and post tomorrow. The brackets were made by Summit Racks. The web site is www.summitracks.com I hope this helps.

Thanks for the pics Jim. Any idea how they made up the space under the tonneau rails were they don't touch the brackets? I know there web site says to put a layer of foam tape, just don't see anything in your pics.

Yes that is what we did, but I think that we did it wrong? We put down a layer of weather stripping and then put the brackets on and then put a layer on cutting out for the brackets. With just one it did not seem to seal very well, I don't want to pull it apart now but I think that if you put on a layer cut out at the brackets that might be the only one you need. The guys that did the install have a lot of experience installing covers so I went with what they thought would work the best.

You said they filled the gap between the retrax and the truck with weather stippibg of some sort?

Yes they used the roll stuff that was about 3/8" thick and about 1" wide.

Hoping they will fit with the wide rails. Looking at your last pic Jim, it appears your bed rails at not at 'flat' as the '15 bed rails.....they sure look like they would work
