My '00 5.3 had the tick, sometimes fairly quiet and sometimes pretty damn loud. Happened for about 45 seconds on every cold start-up.

 

My '13 5.3 has it, too, though it's very faint and only lasts for about 1 second and only about once every five start-ups.

 

Just curious; what's different about the UPF48R oil filter that makes it help with the ticking? Is it the filter media or the relief spring?

The thing is, I don't know if it is the Castrol Edge 5w30 or the UPF48R. All I know is that (for me anyway) it made a big difference. Again it wasn't the Edge extended service variety in the gold bottle, rather, the edge 5w30 in the black.
