Lifter tick

I think it's piston slap because every time the oil pressure gets low, meaning 30 psi it has that annoying tick tick tick. When the oil pressure gets to be appox 40 psi then it goes away. So from what I read it sounds like a piston starved of oil. Now that I put the AC Delco filter on it, it won't even get 40 psi. And I had the purolator filter on it before. That filter would at least get me to 40 psi after about 10 min.

Ok so I changed the oil filter back to a purolator and oil pressure is up but unfortunately the tick is still there and it doesn't seem to want to go away now. I thought it was a oil pressure problem but now I don't even know.

Might just be that your engine was the last engine bored before a tooling change at the factory, so it's at the very end of the factory spec. Some of these newer engines are just plain noisy, no matter what you do.

I wouldn't recommend it for various reasons (especially in a cold climate) but back in the day, some heavier oil always did the trick. I ran 20w-50 in many old vehicles for that reason (and leaks). I recall a guy that my grandfather had as a customer WAY way back that was running gear lube in his engine to stop leaks! That car wasn't long for this world ...

Let me tell you something, I have had nothing but ticking with Mobil 1 5w30. I've used it for more than a decade. My older truck that I sold to my parents still uses it and ticks at 185k miles on the odometer. It has done that since 25k or so. However, on a whim, I used Castrol Edge for my last oil change with UPF48 filter (I'm told this filter is actually just a rebadged Mobil 1 filter). The tick is gone. I'll occasionally catch a little whiff of it, but generally its all gone. I recommend this combination (UPF48 and Castrol Edge 5w30, not the extended performance variety) to anybody who is experiencing this tick. It might work for you. The numbers on Mobil 1 might be great, but if it ticks it ticks. I'm done with it.

I think my next oil change I'm going to try out the Amsoil Signature Series 10w-30 instead of the 5w-30 I've been running. If the AFM don't like it, it'll be time to tune it out. Been wanting to do that for a while now. There seems to be a general fear out there of doing that due to the AFM, since it uses engine oil to operate.

Manufacturers seem to be pushing this thin oil (especially Ford with their 5w-20), and from what I've been seeing, the engines are getting noisier from it (and some are blowing up or breaking down due to mechanical failures - don't have any evidence that it's oil related, but I have my suspicions).

With the "save-a-buck" mentality of manufacturing today, crap components are a definite possibility too. Or, it's a combination of both. These days you never know.

Before you go doing that with the Amsoil, give the Castrol a try. Use 5w30 and a Mobil 1 filter. It seems ridiculous, but it really did work for me.

I'm an Amsoil dealer, so some of it I end up with for free. Works out well.

I have been having the engine tick since I baught my truck and I have tried everything to get the tick to go away completely and nothing has really helped. My tick turned into a light tap with a little bit of rattling and just yesterday I had a mechanic check it out and I found out that I have a rod bearing going bad so I guess I'll start looking for an engine. It sucks but what can ya do.

Solution: Oil pump seal/screen.

No snake oil or flushes needed. :)

Does this apply to GMT-900 trucks also?

I would believe so, these engines are practically the same design up until 2013. The valve train and lubrication system should operate under the same principles.

My dads 2006 4.8 was completely fixed by doing this, and his tick was horrible. It sounded like the engine was about to grenade itself to pieces at all times, whether it was idling or accelerating.

He had a local (Phx) diy mechanic complete the job for about $250-300 including parts and labor.

Just an update, the combination of UPF48 and Castrol Edge 5w30 (not the extended performance variety) has continued to keep my truck nearly 100% tick free. It's so refreshing to go up to a drive up window and not have the thing ticking.

Internet. I've learned the hard way to not even bother attempting to find certain parts locally. Tax free as an added bonus.
