Daytime Runnigh lamps

My originals lasted about a 1 1/2 years.  I replaced them with the blue coated ones.  They lasted about a week.  I replaced them with another set of blues.  Lasted about another week.  When I replaced them the last time, I noticed the white plastic around the bulb was burned a little.  Have you guys had the same problem?

what brand bulb?  I put in the sylvania amber ones and they have been fine

Easy answer.  You are using a very cheap bulb.  Any bulb that has a blue coating in my book is cheap...If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard the infamous "these blue blubs dont last long".  Even my younger brother bought a set of bulbs from an internet vendor for his RSX..he spent WAY TOO much $$ in my opinion...well they lasted a whole 9 days.  I made sure I gave him "I told ya so" when I was home to see my parents.  Even when they were working, he noted that the light output was lower than with his regular halogens....they did look "bright white" when you looked at them head on....but thats because the blue coating "filters" out the lower light spectrum.  Not a good thing.

 

Do yourself a favor and buy a set of bulbs that Ryan suggested....they make the regular type and a "long lasting" type as well.....

How many people have noticed the number of Trucks/SUV's running around with only 1 DRL?   is up with that.....  Around here It's like I see 2 or 3 everyday on the way too and from work..

I have a set of blue bulbs in my license plate lights.  They have lasted so far for over 6 months.  They are apc brand i believe.

I've seen this as well.  I believe GM got a bad supplier or is using a cheap version of the DRL bulb.  Right now I am using a "Long Life" version and they are over 1 year old.

On my 2001 Silverado the left one burned out at about 18 months, the right one at about 28 months, and they were the only lamps which burned out on the truck.  In fairness, I suppose none of the other lamps are on every minute you're driving the truck.  

 

On my 2003 none have burned out, and I notice it's a different bulb type from the 2001.

I am glad to see that I am not the only person that has noticed all of the silverados, tahoes, and suburbans that have at least one of their DRL's burned out.  Good call on GM going with a cheap supplier on those.  I tried the "blue" lights in my truck for a while - I had them for the low and high beams as well as the fog lights.  Although they looked cool and the bulbs didn't ever burn out (while I had them in), they did get so hot that they melted my fog lamp casing.  All the mechanical parts inside burned off and were rattling around, so I had to buy new fogs.  Those were fairly inexpensive on ebay, but I immediately pulled the blue bulbs out of the low/high beams - I figured those would be expensive to replace if they melted.  So I am now against the blue bulbs...go with a name brand if you decide to do it though.

Get sylvania silver stars........  Worth the money. As for the PIAA, if you like to pay more for a name then go with theres.

 

Stay away from lights at Wal-mart or you'll be running around with 1 or maybe both lights out.......

Yep went out this weekend and upgraded...... THen I went out to the farm and checked them out......  Much improvement.

 

Do you think that the wiring harness would be money well spent also? That powers the lights directly from the batery not thru the switch?

I believe the bulbs that GM installs from the factory are 500 hour bulbs, which I guess means they should last about 500 hours.  I had one of mine burn out at about 600-700 hours, and when the vehicle was in for service the dealer noticed it and replaced it for free.  The second one is still running.  They also offer a 4000 hour long lasting bulb, but I forget the PN.  I can get it for you when I get home if you want. let me konw.

If the OEM bulbs are truely only 500 hour bulbs, Chevy needs to change that.  500 hours is nothing, seeing as how the lights are always on when the truck is (except at night)  I do know that you can get the bulbs replaced if the vehicle is under its factory warranty.

Yep, virtually all of the silverados, sierras, tahoes, etc that I see have at least one bulb burnt out.  Mine still work fine, but that is because I Always shut them off when I get in my truck...that override switch is great. :thumb:

Huh?  That over-ride switch is great when you need to lose someone at night.. why would you want to turn your DRL's off during the day?
