Steering Wheel Minor Squeak

Recommended Posts

Posted

On a recent road trip, my steering wheel has a rather annoying minor squeak when making minor road corrections. Sounds like its coming right between the wheel and column. Only happens if I haven't rotated the wheel around in a while, which explains why I don't see it around town. On the road trip, came to a light in a small town, rotated the wheel lock to lock, and squeak was gone for a few miles, then came back. If I was a betting man, I would say rotation keeps grease well distributed, but minor corrections move enough out of the way to cause it to rub on the plastic in one spot.

Anyone else have this? Got it fixed, and have info on what they did to fix it? Looking for info from others that hopefully had it fixed before I meet with GM reps this Friday about my truck.

I have the same problem. Just figured that the dealer won't be able to duplicate the problem since only occurs after driving awhile and during minor steering corrections that you describe. So I'm not going to waste my time on taking it in. I've already had my share of "can't duplicate customers concern ".

Let us know how you come out on this.

Took the truck in this morning for this squeak and another issue. Dealership says they knew what it was, and need to order a new "clockspring". Once the part is put in, I'll update if it solves the issue.

Hey CounterMeasure,

Glad to see that the dealership is working towards a resolution. We look forward to your updates, and are here if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Nope. They changed the clockspring in there, and I took the long way home from the dealership only to have it do it again. I have bigger issues with the truck, so I haven't tried to follow up on that specific point. At this point, I don't expect it to be resolved while I own the vehicle. GM and the dealership keep saying "buyback" while I say "fix" for various issues. At this point, I suspect they just want to sell the truck as pre-owned and hope the next owner doesn't expect as much "precision" or "professional grade".

Im pretty sure I have the same thing as you. VERY minors road corrections (move the wheel 1/4 or 1/2 inch) to make a little rattle or squeak as you put it( pretty faint sound)? I noticed the first time driving on the highways going to the mountains and back, but I've noticed it more of like you said when you don't turn/steer for a while. Sorry to hear you are having more and bigger problems with your truck! to be honest this and one other rattle from the big back seat when it is folded up are the only problems I have had, if you can even call those problems. I am a huge stickler for random noises and rattles in my vehicles obvisouly thats why I looked into it here. I was going to bring it up when I take it in for its first oil change but i may investigate a little myself in the next few days. hopefully i can come back with a solution!

Has anyone found a solution to this issue? I've been hearing the same creek from my steering wheel on minor corrections almost since the day I bought it. I have a 2015 Silverado LT.

Yes. About 8 months ago I had finally had enough, so I went on a drive with the column covering off, which is really easy to remove. Pinpointed the noise to two white plastic parts rubbing on each other. One is a pin that goes into the groove of another, and moves in that groove when you turn the wheel. After a while, the small amount of yellowish grease in that area is pushed to each side when you do minor corrections, resulting in the noise as the plastic rubs. Once you turn the wheel around, you redistribute the grease. I was able to get a bunch more grease up in there on the tip of a screwdriver, and never had the noise again.

Then about 6 months ago, the telescoping feature of the column locked in the outer most position. I couldn't get it to collapse. So they replaced the whole column, and luckily this new one doesn't make the noise.

Hope this helps!

I have the noise, dealer couldn't reproduce customer concern so I have been dealing with it. Mine makes a more pronounced squeak when turning the steering wheel lock to lock, like when in a parking lot. It's annoying as heck and embarrassing when my co workers are in the vehicle with me, but not as bad as when the transmission CLUNKS and lunges forward....

I took my truck to the dealer, explained the situation, and they replaced some parts and there is no more creeking sound.

WTI futures <> current 4-7% inflation and national average gas price over $4.00/gallon.   The spot price, at delivery, is currently $87-$95/barrel which is why gas prices remain high.   Edit: oH mY gOd mEnTaL BrEaKdoWn In tHE pOsT aBOve mInE. • He does, actually. In another unrelated video he mentions the president called him in the middle of the night to relay some information on a cause (religious based) that he's invested in. Glenn expressed concern that another leftist administration could wield too much power with some procedure the Pentagon was using, classifying certain religions a certain way. Being that he is LDS (Latter Day Saints), he gets hate all the time from ALL over the political spectrum, so he's invested in this. Trump called him back at 5AM to tell him he had made some changes to that classification.   So, yes, they are and have been in contact regularly since the start of the administration. Glenn, of course, always asks his permission before discussing anything on the air.   I already spent an hour or more just searching for these videos. I may have my numbers wrong - I'm not a numbers guy. It may have been a MILLION barrels, not 1.5. The point is, our President, by his actions, gives a crap about America, and US - this is completely OPPOSITE the actions of the prior administration who projected hatred for anyone who wasn't following the left's edicts in lock-step.   Remember, they called January 6th an "Insurrection", when there were ZERO weapons among the crowd, undercover FBI agents agitating the crowd, along with paid leftists acting as aggressors, egging the crowd on in an attempt to whip everyone into a frenzy. It's all been proven.  Pelosi refused Trumps request for more National Guard troops. This smells 100% like an inside job for those with critical thinking skills. Only a handful of guys in the crowd got wrapped up in that, thankfully, but EVERYONE was searched out based on cell phone data, and charges were brought against many. And 6 or so people were locked up and left in solitary confinement for YEARS with ZERO due process!! If you give the slightest crap about our Nation, REGARDLESS of your political leanings, this should frighten you to your core. This is what men suffered, bled, fought, and died against 250 years ago!   This has gone FAR BEYOND left vs. right. This is a  threat to America, and our way of life. This is PRECISELY why Trump, a BILLIONAIRE who could have chosen to take Melania and sit on some tropical island that he could afford to buy himself and RELAX, instead chose to run for office, get hate from literally every corner of the media, get ATTEMPTS on his LIFE constantly, and begin to repair some of the severe damage that's been done to this Great Nation.   I don't know why I bother wasting my precious time here. Everyone has their minds made up. They won't realize we all were correct until it's too late ... after they elect another tyrant that hates America to office (Obama), or another puppet whose administration is secretly running the show behind the scenes (Biden).
