2014 Silverado 4WD Fail

Yesterday, my 2014 Silverado 4x4's warning came on: "Service 4WD". That is all it said. I was pulling into a parking lot, and the truck was set in "Auto" for the 4WD. Suddenly, it felt like the back wheels were being braked and skidding, but the truck was moving. I pulled into a parking spot, and flicked the switch to 2WD...no light. Back to Auto, and the little indicator light came on. Moved to 4WD hi, no light. Back to 2WD, no light...no indication on dash screen that I had changed the settings. I tried to back up, the truck moved, but the rear tires were locking up and skidding. Called GM for tow truck. It is at the dealer now. Anyone else had this experience?

Is the weather bad enough that you still need to be in auto? Other than that take it to the dealer, not much you can diagnosis over the internet these days with the electronic modules in the new vehicles.

Snowing in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma? Where did that come in?

I put the truck in "Auto" mode when it is raining like a cow peeing on a flat rock here. The truck will fishtail like a beeotch if in 2WD.

My mistake, I looked at the wrong poster. Sounds like it's broke, but rain on pavement isn't a normal situation you'd use Auto 4WD, or at least I haven't in the 15+ years I've been driving GM's with that feature.

Well, I have been driving Tahoes and trucks for many years (05 Tahoe also) and never had any issues with using the 4WD in the heavy rains we get here. This truck's ass end will come around in a second in the rain if you even sniff on the gas pedal, so rather than take out another car next to me, the Auto works well. Never had an issue with the Tahoe in 140000 miles.

The system probablly just needs a reset. I had a couple of issues when it was cold with a no lite. Never had a service 4WD messgae though.

One time when it was warm I had to cycle the switch to get it to light up again.

I switch 4 Auto on for one road as it's the main road going to the Canadian/US boarder and has trucks going down it 24/7 so it is always slick from the fluids coming from all the trucks.

Sorry, but I have been driving for 25 years and have owned cars that have been up to and over 400rwhp and I have never had any of them try to come around me in any rain. If your truck is trying to come around you in the rain maybe you should slow down and lighten up on the gas pedal. Heck even with the 6.2l in my truck it has never tried to come around on me while I have driven in heavy rain, which was actually last week when I went thru a downpour of a storm.

Auto engages the clutch packs in the transfer case at about 10% until wheel slip is detected, then the computer engages the transfer case fully.

do you still have the goodyear tires on the truck? sr-a's?

I know what he is saying though, those goodyears are crap in the rain, mine would spin out all the time in turns or where the pavement was slick. painted crosswalk, forget about it. not driving hard either. auto was a good way to prevent it driving in town.

hope the dealership can just reset the system and fix the bigger issue.

Probably drove it around in Auto on pavement for awhile and busted something in the transfer case. I've had to replace 3 transfer cases due to Auto on GM vehicles since 2007.

I still have factory Goodyear SR-As on my truck and it has 0 problem staying in control in the rain. It has Traction Control and Stabilitrak so really in these trucks there's no need to put it in auto 4x4 just because of rain. I've even gone about 15-20 over the speed limit in a tight curve while raining and didn't have any problems. It was where it lowered the speed by 10 mph just for the curve and I stayed 5 over of the speed before it was lowered. So I would go around 60 in a 55 and then lowered to 45 for the curve and I just kept it at 60. Auto 4x4 is for when it goes back and forth between dry/wet pavement to snow, slush or ice.

As for the problem, it should still be under warranty so take it to the dealer. It's probably something electronic.

Just relaying my experience, yours is different, that's nice. it was just a theory on why he's having issues in the rain. It's never out of control but gets a little loose on occasion. I don't use auto on the highway, taking hard curves going 60 is no problem. But I have certain corners on city streets near my location where I know if it's wet I will spin out a bit every time when it's raining unless I am going 5 mph making the turn. the TC always kicks in and keeps it under control. Oddly, they aren't half bad in the snow, it's the rain where I have issues with the sr-a's. I used auto in different conditions on my Tahoe with 200k and never had an issue, but it was older, maybe they changed something along the way. Auto is great during the winter in changing conditions.

The SR-As seem better in rain than snow to me. This past winter if mine was only 2wd I would have had problems. My point though was that the tires seem fine in the rain. With the systems we have in the trucks now there's no need for auto 4x4 in rain, even if it's pouring. I keep mine in 2wd and never had a problem in rain or anything, only put it in 4hi or auto 4wd when it snowed.

I put LT Terra grapplers on mine and run them @ around 60 PDS and it does get a little squirrely. A lot more than the SRA p rated tires or the LS2's that were on my first 14.
