Foot/Footwell Lighting - Color Match & Wiring

Foot/Footwell Lighting:

I'm OCD to say the least, has anyone used or know of LED lighting (bulbs, strips, pods) that match EXACTLY to the interior front and rear dome lights?

Also, I saw the threads that discussed and showed you what wire(s) to tap into so that the lights you add turn on with the dome lights when the doors are open, BUT...no mention of where the lights that you add will come on with the switch on the roof (off/door/on).

Basically, I want the foot lighting that I plan on adding to come on when the doors are open, when I unlock the doors with the keyfob, AND when I select 'On' on the switch on the roof next to the sunglass holder. Possible? I don't see why not.

Which wires or does it already function like I'm wanting with the current wires that are being tapped into in the previous discussions?

My main concern is for them to come on when I switch it to 'On' from the switch on the roof of the truck. That way if you drop something on the floor and you need light by your feet, you can turn on the dome lights, which will also turn on the foot lighting. I would really like them to be separate, but I doubt it's possible. Meaning, if I don't use the 'On' switch on the roof, but rather push the individual dome light, lets say on the driver side, that it would activate only the driver side foot lighting. That would be sweet. Possible?

I used the grey wire in the drivers side pillar when I hooked mine up in my 14. Need to do it again in my 15 but I'm waiting to do it when I add some other lights. But that wire will turn the lights on as you want. If you push the switch on the overhead console, they'll come on.

As far as matching the lights, I used these little pods from oznium. I was happy with the color matching the domes/maps from the factory.

There's talk of 2 different grey wires, was it the skinny or thicker one? Does one of them have a stripe on it? It's been a while since I read all those posts/threads.

There's 2 grey wires, one has a green stripe, the other is solid grey. You want the SOLID GREY wire which is the thicker of the 2 wires. Tapping this wire will give you the on with doors open and on with the "on" switch

If you want the lights to come on at the flick of the switch in each position, I'm not really sure but my guess is you'll almost definitely need to pull down the headliner to run wires above it from each light in the headliner, to the light in the respective footwell. I wanted to go this route at first too but thinking about it, it just sounds like a lot more work than it's worth.

I have pods from XK-glow.com and you sound about as OCD as I am when it comes to lights matching in color mike look perfect compared to the OEM lights, looks just like factory color

EDIT: also if you'd rather not have to run a wire from the pillar, you can find the same wire sitting behind the black cover under the far left side of the driver side dash. Wire is in the top left connector

How did you ground the individual lights?

I grounded each light individually to the closest screw. Just used a ring terminal connector. As for the back set I just used a short self tapping screw and screwed into the body underneath the center console

Can someone help me and tell me what wire in the driver or passenger door will do the same thing ( on when door opens, goes off when door is closed ) as mentioned in earlier posts. I'm wanting to install one of those ghost led lights in the door. Thanks

Are you looking for something that activates with the dome lights or puddle lights? If dome lights, then wire is solid grey, if puddle lights, then it's grey with a light green stripe

Do you happen to know what size wire tap is being used?

I've used both 22-18 gauge and 16-14 gauge

The 16-14 went on easier but haven't had an issue on either circuit

I am planning on adding the Opt7 Aura kit to the footwells. I have read about the grey and or yellow wires as a power source. I am wondering if a relay is required because of increased amp draw. Or is there no issue since leds draw so little additional power.

No issues. LEDs draw too little power.

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
