E-Parking Brake

My rear pass side parking brake is not grabbing. Just installed new rotors, pads, e-brake shoes. I adjusted the E-brake shoes correctly.

Cable is activating lever on the back side of the backing plate, lever moves to perpendicular to backing plate.

Seems like there is something missing in the mechanism that pushes the shoe(s)??

Anyone have any diagrams of this? I can't find one anywhere. Can the part be bought at a dealer or aftermarket sales?

BTW, I recently bought the truck with e-brakes not working. When I pulled the pass side rotor, the lining was almost new. Lining on the D side was worn, so this may have been a problem for the previous owner.

Are you able to have the disc rotor off and then have someone actuate the parking brake while you look at it to see if it is in fact moving? How did the adjuster look?

Probably need to do that, but no one around to run the pedal. The lever definitely moves. Does the adjuster lever just put pressure on the adjusters inside the backing plate area to spread the shoe? Or is there a part between the lever and the adjusters, or does the lever just push directly on the adjuster?

The adjuster spreads the shoe making it expand so that it can make contact with the rotor drum. You basically adjust it out to where it just makes contact and then back it off a click or two.

The one piece shoe does not spread, rather, it "skews".

Yes, lever connects directly to adjuster.

If the actuator lever moves, but brakes aren't contacting drum surface, check:

If shoe is properly seated on adjuster.

Adjuster internal part broken / missing.

Impropoer adjustment of adjuster.

Update in case anyone has a similar situation in the future.

There is a small shaft, about 5mm diameter x 1" long, that fits between the brake cable activation lever and the plunger that moves the shoe. This was missing on the pass side of my brakes. Must have been lost by the PO or someone who had worked on the brakes for him, that is why the pass side shoes were still new while the drivers side was worn out.

I made a new one out of an old valve adustment screw from a VW, figured it should probablly be some hard material instead of a small grade 2 bolt, and my e brakes work well now. Pedal doesn't go to the floor anymore and both brakes hold well.

Keep an eye out for that thing when you do an e brake service, I can see how you could loose it if you service the adjuster and plunger while doing an e brake replacement.
